male maybe several years. female 2 years or less before her tail will touch the other side.

At the base of the tail, males will have 2 claspers, females will have nothing. They're easily spotable from below even when small. If its not possible to see the ray form beneath or if the ray doesnt swim up the viewing glass pane, you can wait till the tail is facing you and they should be visible.
