is it ok to put 2 males with 2 females??? will that increse or decres the chances of breeding???

thanks

If they are all mature then you may get some fighting, you never know til you try, they are less likely to fight in 1000 gals than they would in 300 gals,

4 motoros with 2 of them females are going to need an enormous tank though, let alone other tanks for removing fruity males to allow the females to recuperate, I wouldn't attempt 4 motoros without a 10x4 foot print...those females get huge.

What size tank are you thinking of and where would you keep the pups?

i have a lttle over 200 gal at the moment it has to females and one male in it curently. the pups would be housed in side of a 120 gal tank till bigger then go into a 180 tank till i could get a pond built for them in a basment but i wasent going to get the pond up and going till i know i can get the fish to breed so i was kinda waiting on the whole pond thing till i really need it thanks for the advice i will probly just hold of on getting anny more till i get the pond up and going i thoght they might fight the rays i have now do verry good in the 200 gal fat and happy ;)

what are the tank dimensions? seems like a tight fit for 3 mature motoros, let alone adding another.

i'm running a 300g custom tank, 6ft x 4ft x 22inches tall, for my 2 retics and even then i would be wary to add more rays.

I am guessing you have a 6'x2' tank, if thats so depending on the size of your females they may have a hard time breeding in there. You should also be aware that female motoros will grow to be over 2ft sometimes. I would definitely get that pond going asap before they outgrow your 200.

As to 2 males and 2 females it depends mostly on your males. Having 2 males will motivate them to mate as they compete with each other for females. You just have to make sure they aren't attacking each other. You should also have a way to separate them from the females so they don't continue to try to mate with them and cause the females to abort her pups.

I would stick with the 3 rays you have already as your tank is to small for any more, also it will add more compatition for food and put more load on your filtration. When your females get pregnant they will be eating twice as much food and become more active so space is a must. How big are they now?

my tank is 6 1/2 feet long and 2feet 9 wide my bigest female is 11 to 12 inches my smaller female is about 9 to 10 and my male is 6 to 7 inches the guy that i got the rays from said they would do good in a 120 but from every thing i have read in here it is not the case lol i do plan on getting a 2500 gal pond going just a lill tight on money right now. so i will get started on getting material for the pond and gett going asap thanks guys you have been verry help full when i got my rays i dident kno that much about them but i have been studing on them alot and have learnd a bunch.. how long till the rays are to big for my 200 gall????

thanks again

I would agree with Toby, about another year till it gets to be a real problem, but your rays will appreciate the extra space even now.

Just a side note, you had mentioned breeding, not sure if your aware or not but that 6-7" male is not going to be ready for breeding for a while, probably 6-12 months depending on his growth rate. Usually happens when they are right around 12". Your big female might be ready or close, smaller one probably needs a few more inches.

yea i know the male isnt reddy yet he has a while cuz he dosent seem to be growing nearly as fast as my females have he has grown a lill bit but nothing like the females i will get a pond up and running in a few months it will take me a lill bit of time but the rays will have a real nice final home .. i sure wish ppl that sell fish would learn a lill more about them be for they sell them ;) thanks you guys have been verry help full on this with me it is verry much apretiated so if you have anny thing else i need to know anny tricks with breeding i would like to here them for when iam redy i new the male wasnt even close but just want my ducks in a row befor the male gets going lol:)
