i have a young male motoro in a 150 grow out tank at the moment. in the last few days he has stopped eating, been raising his tail slightly, and seems to be bumbing into things when swimming unusually. almosts seems as if he has sight problems. just sems sluggish in general

the tank is well established and all tank mates ( Dat, pbass, widebar silver dollars) are all doing great. amonia = 0, ph = 7.0, nitrite = 0, nitrate < 10. temp is 84

did a 40% waterchange and added some salt. he has not presented any curling but after one day still seems to be sluggish and bumping into things

anybody have recomendations or thoughts on this? very worried...

thanks guys

read the directions on the test kit again.... nitrate should not be low than 10. even if you have the tank on a drip system. just letting ya know that, since u said the tank is established/cycled

is the test kit a test tube drip kit or is it the strips?

drip type. keep in mind this is after a series of large water changes. 40 percent once per day over the last three days. had not tested the nitrates in a few weeks prior to this event. but i keep up with water changes 1-2x a week so nitrates should be under control.

local tap water is good. 7.0

Sounds like a possibility for ammonia/ or nitrite.

Could a piece of rotting food be under a rock or have gotten into your filter?

he has stopped eating in the last few days. nothing appears to be wrong physically. slime coat is in good shape and underside is not red.

by the way his diet is mostly hikari sinking carnivore with a mix of earth, blood, and black worms 2x a week.

The temp is kind of high, at that temp you may have a problem with dissolved oxygen

If I where you I would lower the temp and/or add more aeration to the water.

I have noticed rays to be one of the most sensitive fish when it comes to oxygen in the water. They are one of the first to suffer, only later would you notice any other fish hanging out by the top or gasping.

Plus it can't hurt anything :)

^^^ agree ^^^ also, try getting some silversides from the pet store. Frozen. then thaw rt before you put in the tank. If you can, seperate him so you know he gets the food in his area of the tank.
clear all decor on one end of your tank, put in a divider and have only him in the decor free area. feed the silversides and see if he eats them. take out any uneaten food after about 20 min.
try more air also..
