is it normal for them to keep swimming up and down the wall of a tank...i catch him doing this alot when the lights are off...if i turn the lights on he stops and swims along the bottom or burys himself is this normal

yes it is normal, my rays do it all the time. even with the lights on, they also play in the bubbles from my air stone. its actually pretty cool to watch.

When they swim up and down the glass its a good sign that the ray is happy because if a ray stays in one spot they can be stressed.. Also it can mean he is hungry because they know food comes from the top down... and becareful if u have the top is open because i had a friend who had his motoro jump out <<< doesnt happen often though

thanks for the warning i keep the tops closed though had and aro jump out before while i wasnt home....lessoned learned i wont do it again

My rays do it as well, especially when they are young. As others said, they like to play in the bubbles and do it more often when hungry. I had rays hover over top of an air stone for hours, I guess they like the feeling of the bubbles.

Rays are exceptional predators and very sensitive to their surroundings. They can be very, very inquisitive and learn quickly where to find extra morsels of food. They are not shy about learning their surroundings. "Flying" in current or "playing" in bubbles is completely normal.

Only worry if they make a habit of remaining buried for long periods of time (hours). This is a sign of stress and or illness. If the rays are swimming or gliding around constantly, no worries, it's all good.:)

Respectfully,
FireMedic.

thanks for all the input everyone just asking any other suggestions on food right now they are on blood worms and earthworms chopped of course..cant find blackworms here...is it to early for shrimp one is like 5-6in and the other 2 are 3-4 i guess

I dont have a ray yet but I am going to get one in the very near future so I have been reading the stingray stickies and threads a lot. I have a question on this topic: What if you are leaving your tops open(always when home, never when Im not at home) to keep your tank a little cooler and your ray happens to jump out. I know you have to be REAL careful but how do you pick it up without getting stung or causing the ray any real harm. My 150 stays 3-4 dgr's cooler with the top open and Im always within earshot or eyeshot away.
