Okay, so I read the stickies and some other threads, but I still have a few questions, so here goes nothing:

  1. What is the average growth rate of a male motoro?
  2. How long will a juvenile motoro be comfortable in the aquarium size mentioned in the sticky (60" x 18")?
  3. Do most male motoros stop growing well before hitting the 30" mark?
  4. What pH range is recommended for motoros?
Thanks all!

They grow pretty fast until the 9-10" disk range

You could keep a pup in that tank safely for 6-12 months max

I have never seen a 30" male ever

Whatever ph comes from your tap is best just introduce them to it properly and then keep it stable

If you have any more questions feel free to ask everyone in the ray forum is very helpful

The one pointer I give everyone is the one that was given to me. No matter how much you think it is going to eat and how large of a bioload you are expecting it will be a lot more. Test your water often for the first few months.

and Good Luck they are awesome

always good to have extra filtration. they should be feed 2 to 3 times a day. so u can imagine the poop as well. my 3 i feed 3 to for times an i feed diffrent things each time. a good diet is always a plus as well to faster growth.

Both the guys above gave good info
so what they said......:)

Totally agree with all of above.

If you are going to keep one then make sure you have the following too:

1) Space and money for a bigger tank...you WILL need one.
2) Big filtration, you will need at least 2 large external filters or a big sump
3) Make sure you are totally "on your game" with knowledge of water quality, the smaller the tank, the harder it will be to keep the water stable
4) An easy route to large water changes, you will be doing them WEEKLY or more...
5) New and in date test kits for Ammonia, PH, Nitrite and Nitrate...test your tap water for Nitrate and PH too.

As already mentioned above....these things produce bio loaded waste by the bucket load.

Thanks for the help all!

I plan on building a bigger aquarium during the summer, so I should be fine on having a large enough aquarium before it outgrows the currently planned one.

I have the supplies to test the water on a frequent basis and plan on having a decent-sized sump. I'm used to working with fish that produce a lot of waste for their size (gars, lungfish, catfish, etc.) and have been able to maintain pretty good water quality. I plan on doing things in a similar fashion to what I already do with my other fish but I'll be sure to pay extra attention to the water quality for the ray.

Another question: From reading the stickies and other threads, it seems that general consensus is to feed rays a combination of prepared fish/shellfish and MP. How difficult will it be to switch a ray over to those foods from black worms?

Rays are fairly easy to get onto new foods if they are healthy and happy

I had my pup eating pellets in just a few weeks which is probably the hardest thing to get them to eat

I would also HIGHLY recommend searching for the DIY ray food thread that was started by Fire Medic. I have had great success with making my own food it is more cost effective and convenient and better for the ray too.

The best first food for rays IMO is cut up earthworms. They love them and they are very filling. The only down side is they can be a bit messy
