Hey folks i recently got a motoro stingray from aquascape.com was in perfect condition. After 2 weeks i noticed a small wound on his back i tested my water and it came up good except nitrate was a bit high bout 80ppm and my PH is 7.2 ammonia 0 chlorine 0 nitrite 0. so i stopped feeding them so much, i do a 30% water change every monday, i tested my water from the tap its good not high in nitrate.

What i think it is, he likes to swim up the sides of the tank and behind the heaters, i think he got stuck behind one and maybe got burnt the tank is at 77 degrees all day maybe a bit lower max out at 78. I have 2 400w heaters its a 180g tank with a fluval fx5 here is some pics of his wound it got a lot worse so i decided to ask for some advice.

Agree, sounds like maybe a heater is not covered and they need to be, could have got hurt on the decor, start thinking about 50% water changes

Definitely heater burn. You need to cover the heaters in a ray tank since they like to climb up the sides and they have sensitive skin. Keep the water clean and it should clear up on it's own. And as Kevin said above, start doing 50% or more water changes every week. 30% is not enough with Rays as they are very messy.

No the heaters are not covered they're just suctioned to the back of the tank. I didnt even know you could buy covers looks like i need em anyone know somewhere to pick one up or a website? Thanks for all the help i will start doing 50% water changes again guys thank you.

My suggestion would be just make covers for your heaters asap so this doesn't happen again. PVC pipe that the heater will fit in and drill a bunch of holes in the pvc for flow. Also a couple end caps to keep the heaters in place. If I could dig mine out I would take a picture of them for you. Let me see what I can do. Unless you can find covers locally I would go diy and get it done tonight.

Also like Didysis said keep up on the water changes and up the amount to help keep the water cleaner.

Second thing to look into would be possibly changing your substrate down the road. Not now with the ray having a wound but after it heals.

I moved the heaters in the corner of the tank he never really goes there for now, i ordered the guards for 2 day delivery cost 3 times as much as the dang heaters and will do a 50% water change tonight thanks folks

i just read your post silent bob after i ordered the covers, there were none locally. but 2-3day shipping isnt bad

Couple other suggestions would be to temporarily try and hang them in the very middle of the tank. Just because you rarely see it go in the area you moved them to doesn't mean it won't.

You could also pull the heaters temporarily till the guards arrive if your house doesn't stay to cool over summer with the ac on. Just let the house heat the tank till they show up.

Good luck and I hope he heals up for you.
