I am fascinated by motoro stingrays, can I get a pair (6" each) and keep them in a 6 by 2 by 2 foot tank( about 100 gallons), what type of filter do they need? There are these small white shrimp I get from a fishing shop as bait, that are about an inch long on average, I feed my tire track eel and Asian knifefish those shrimp. Will the stingrays eat that? They sell dead and living ones extremely cheap. Also I can get these other dish fry that are about one cm long dirt cheap, the lfs man said they are local guppies.

Have a read of the stickies about rays, 100 gallon isnt big enough for one motoro let alone a pair, them six inch rays would very very quickly out grow your tank, you would need your water to be top notch keeping rays of any sort. A lot people keeping rays would use 100 gallon tank as a sump so gives you a idea of the size setup you would need for a pair of motoro. Not trying to preach to you just my opinion :)

Your tank would be about 170 gallons but to have a good ray tank you need width not length try going for a smaller species of ray the Potamotrygon Hystrix / Reticulata

I agree, motoros get huge.

My apologies, I just put the dimensions of the tank I mentioned on the calculator of this website and it is actually almost 180 gallons for a 6 by 2 by 2
Is that substantial for the pair of rays?

No not long term. A year tops depending on size of ray when purchased

So then how many gallons is long term?
Can I keep one stingray in the 180 gl

Each ray is going to have their own long term tank requirements. If you check the stickies in the ray sub forum you will find profiles for each. That would be a great start for you.

Yes you can keep a ray in a 180 gallon tank. It will not be for very long as most do grow to a decent size within the first year. You will be needing to upgrade before you know it. To give you an idea in the 2 years I have been keeping rays myself I went from a 210 to a 300 to a 600 to I am now building a 7'×12'×3'. Space for a ray is just as important as water quality is. The bigger the better.

That is if you plan to keep that specific ray long term. Most people don't hang on to fish long term. Here is a picture to give you an idea of what a motoro can grow to after 6 years. The tub she is in is 32.5" long x 20.5" wide and is 37 gallons.

Ok I will read the other forums but after that last post, I prob won't get the Ray. There's no point in getting an animal when u can't do justice to it

Not trying to scare you. Just showing you the size a motoro can get to. Everyone always tells people they get big and I figured that was the best way to show you. Check the stickies as there are others out there you may be able to keep. Hystrix stay smaller but I would stay clear of motoros.
