Hey all, woke up this morning and discovered a little bump on my female motoro and tonight when I got home from work it opened up to a little sore. I am a first time ray owner and am not sure what to treat it with. I just got done feeding them and they are eating well and acting normal... I was planning on doing a 75 % water change and adding salt and some rid funges stuff... primary diet is night crawlers, I actually haven't fed them for a few days with the intent to try to get them to accept shrimp and tilapia
They are currently housed in a 75 while my 150 is getting repaired I am running 2 400 biowheels,1 magnum 350 and 1 fluval 400 on it and do a about 50% water change every 3 days... water parameters are
Ph 7.9 ammo. 0 nitrite, 0 nitrate 15-20 and temp 79
looking for any suggestions and recommendations.

That's a higher ph than I would keep. Try slowly lowering it towards 7 for more optimal water conditions.

Once they are in the 150 with some wood the ph should hit neutral or lower! This is just a temp holding tank and i didn't really want to mess with the water paremeters since it s pretty stable!

Wouldn't worry about the pH. That looks like heater burn and if you have an uncovered heater in your tank that'll answer the question of what caused it.

As for treatment, clean water and maybe a little salt, no need to go crazy and I wouldn't add any fungus treatment or whatever it is you're considering. Clean conditions should be enough to see improvement in a few days.

If you have an uncovered heater, cover it STAT.

Thanks for the feed back! it very well could of been the heater bc it was knocked off of the holders! I did a 50% last night and treated it with salt and a half dose of Kardon's Rid fungus, I used the rid Fungus so it woudnt get any! I will do another 50-75% water change tonight when i get home and re dose with salt only.

Holders, as a friend of mine can personally attest, can actually make things worse. He had an unshielded heater up against the glass with the standard suction cup holders and the ray got itself pinned between the heater and the glass and received severe burns. It did eventually recover and is just fine now.

I agree with Pete, either need to cover the heater or move it into your sump if you have one ASAP. The heating elements that come with the JBJ True Temp systems are covered and work great, that's what I use in most of my ponds, but there are other options and you can also make your own shield with some PVC and a drill.

On a side note be careful about meds with your ray, they are very sensitive, what is safe for most fish can be poison for a ray. What you used is probably safe if your ray is still doing fine, but I don't see it listed on the ray safe meds list in the stingray section.

can someone show me a link to a diy heater cover? or can i just buy one? i have a eheim heater. thanks, planning to get a ray in a week or 2

Thanks for the feedbacks! So far everthing is lookin pretty good. It hasn't gotten any worse and look a little better than the last couple of days! I have to beleive it is heater burn due to the fact the heater was off of the holders!
For the time being I repostioned the heater on top of one of the spray bar hopefully that will be out of the way for a couple of days! I should have the 150g back up and running in a few weeks since the trim replacement arrived today at the LFS :D cant wait to get that baby back up and running!!!

In the mean time I'll continue with the water changes and the salt treatment to keep the water as pristine as possible!

@ Dannyny, I'm gonna use a extra piece of PVC i have laying around and drill a bunch of hole in it and slide it over the heater that should do the trick! good temp fix till the 150 is back up and running :D
