mottled sculpin!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Maybe I've been doing it wrong, but i give raw shrimp.

I thought you'd be cooking out the good stuff if you prepare them cooked

I think raw is better

hmm... you know i was just about to try some glass/grass shrimp.
and not sure iv herd of Scuds....well i just looked them up and that is interesting....
i have an empty 3 gallon still up and running...and its a hot day i might go look for some scuds ^_^ i collect may fly larva from the creeks all the time and they LOVEEEE them..(seeing how they love anything i drop in the tank thats not saying much)
I was thinking of looking in to trying to breed some sort of shrimp in with my guppy tank.(but they might get eaten).or even in the little 3 gallon, but still doing some research on that ...any suggestions would be great.

and im only the Sculpin master cuz..im like one of...well one on here with them(that iv found...that are active) :P lol and..they are cute ^_^best of all Free!!.

OOHH yah! with the weather being hotter my tank jumped up to the 87!!!!!! omg
but..thanks to a nice high powered fan in the window and on top of the tank its now sitting at 70o...wahoo..its even keeping my room cool lol.

I had them in a 10 g with plants and I would just feed them algae wafers....they will breed if you give them places to hide. My sunfish loved them. A 3g might be big enough, Im not sure. I know of two people who tried to keep sculpins and both had their Sculpins die, thats why Im calling you the Sculpin master!

Lol....i have not done anything special for these guys then i have ever done for any fish...ok i put a fan on top of the tank to keep it around 70..other then that...nothing really i don't use chemicals for anything ..my water change water is dechlorinated by sitting it out for a few days.

though i have noticed they do MUCH better with a varied diet, more so them most fish i have kept..i was busy and low on cash and fed her only blood worms and pellets for a few months and she seemed to stop growing as fast and being as active...apposed to when her diet is varied. Live food dose not seem to be a factor in there health, BUT giving them something to hunt does seem to make them happier, as well as days skipped between full feedings.
She constantly has a supply of about 20 1/4-1/2 inch guppies in the tank at all times, i only feed her every 1-2 days leaving her to hunt if she is hungry this out of every thing iv done seems to make the most difference in there health (feeding wise).

I went collecting up at Baker Lake...didnt find any Scuds there but im going to go look at a few more streams to see if i can get ahold of any.
However i did find litterly 1000s of tadpoles!!! so many the water was black with them moving along in a HUGE mass..it was neat im going to try and go back up soon and get some video if it

Bravo !!! thats one of the nicest setups ive seen. Beautiful plantings, healthy fish, awesome in every way.

Could you tell me where you got your sculpin, and have you kept them before??
I would like to aquire a group of maybe 5-6 to try a breeding project.

Thanks for the pics, and again awesome :)

Thank you very much!^_^
and no i have never kept sculpin or any other native fish before this..was looking for crayfish and caught my main female at under an inch, been addicted ever sens^_^

i caught them in a lake not to far from my house in Washington, Skagit Valley.
Mottled Sculpin are the most abundant sculpin and are in every state in the US found in every thing from rocky shored lakes to fast moving streams. find rocks..gently lift them and look for a suclpin they act allot like crayfish when you turn over rocks..some will sit and wait to see if you see them..others will dart before you can see them...i have found its easier to catch them in lakes, and they seem to tolerate of higher temps in the lakes then in the faster streams witch might be part of why im having success with them the shallow lake shores get hot in the summer.
im hoping to find a few Banded sculpin around here some day as well but all i can find are the Mottled.
Let me know if you find any!!!

ok ID time..well sorta want to show who ever is interested in why i think i have hybrids

I think it's more likely that you have a completely separate species or subspecies rather than a hybrid.

I'm not familiar with the freshwater Sculpin of Washington.
The only 3 I've kept are Banded, Mottled and Ozark (specific to this region).

What county and waterway did you catch them from? That will allow you to get a definitive ID.

all of them came out of the same location, Clear Lake in Skagit Valley

Are the first 2 pics of the same or different fish?

The middle one is a prickly sculpin. I think probably the first one too. You can tell by the black spot on the fin, black line at base of tail and checkered pattern.. And they're common in the water source you got him from.

I didn't think it looked like my mottled sculpin (I've caught several and kept a few), but I thought maybe they just looked different up there.
Mottled sculpin are more easily confused with banded than prickly.

The bottom one I'm not sure about. I think probably a slimy, but the pic isn't showing all of him to help me identify characteristics.
