So I have breed a lot of different cichlids over the last 4 years. My question: Is it better to keep the parents in the same tank and move the fry?? The reason I ask this question is because it seems like moving the parents causes the parents to take a long break on breeding or in some cases cause the the pair to stop breeding all together. And that has happened for me even when moving parents into their own tank that is the same size or bigger. So does anyone have any input on this subject because I just breed a Red Texas/ZZ and a Synspilum and I would like to continue breeding them. Do I move the Fry or the Parents?

I would definetly say in my expirence to move the fry, although I usually don't touch them once they hit the wriggler stage I try to move them a day before them getting to that point. All in all it's easier to move a peice of slate where the eggs are then 200 baby fry which gives you the chance of killing some. I've tried it both ways just make sure if you remove the eggs to use a additive for fungus since you won't have the parents cleaning or fanning the eggs.

I'm relatively new to breeding but I thought i'de give my input. I hope it all works out for you!

I just had both pairs of my convicts breed, and before I get flamed I know its not the biggest accomplishment to get convicts to breed, but they are a steady supply of fish food :) Anyhow, I am leaving the fry with the parents till they are about 1 Month old, so that they are easier to catch, doesnt dissrupt the parents, and doesnt kill the fry off because of poor care. BTW, any new breeders, Rotifers are way easier than cruching up a ton of flake lol :)

I use crushed Hikari Cichlid Gold, and Baby Brine shrimp to feed the fry which always works great.....I always keep the fry with the parents for at least two weeks after they first hatch because cichlids do such a great job as parents.....Its kind of funny because I have a couple tanks in my house but this one 55 gallon I have is like a breeding hot spot and every cichlid that breeds in their has to be moved due to space.....thats why this is such an interesting question to me.....Im starting to feel that its better not to disturb the parents and instead move the fry after a few weeks.....If you have an opinion please share.....

Hey LoshMitchel, how do you move the fry the day they hatch? I would like to know how you do it since I think it is difficult to do so. Any info would be greatly appreciated. I am pondering that question myself.
thanks.
