I'm on vacation from college and I was thinking of taking the opportunity to upgrade my senegal bichir to a 55 gal. He is in a 20 gallon long now. I would like to get a metal stand for the 55 and place the 20 on the bottom. I have some questions first though.

Is a 55 too big for a hob filter? I have used a canister filter before, but I didn't really like it. I was looking at a AquaClear that is rated for 40-70 gal. Would this be enough filtration? I also noticed an AquaClear 500(I think that was the model) that was rated for 100 gals. It was cheaper than the 40-70. The box looked different, so maybe it's an older model. Would this be too much filtration?

Can I safely put my 20 gal long on the bottom of the stand for the 55 gallon? Both tanks should have nearly the same width. The problem is the 20 is not as long and would not have support under the ends, except in the corners. Also do you think 75 gallons worth of aquariums would be too much to put on my floor in only the floor space of a 55? I've kept a 55 in the area I plan to place this one in the past.

On http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=108320&page=2 (3rd from bottom) nvrmor2paradise refers to placing an aquarium pad under the stand. Will I need to worry about this with my setup? My floor is carpet. Is this important for support or to prevent the aquarium from damaging the floor?

When I move the 20 I plan to completely empty the aquarium(water and gravel). My plan is to put what water I can in pails with the gravel and put the rest of the water in cleaned pop bottles. Should this be good enough to preserve the beneficial bacteria during the move?

After I have the tanks in place I plan to keep my fish in the 20, until I feel the 55 is cycled enough.

Thanks for taking the time to read my questions

first of all dont worry about the weight of both tanks i have 200 gallons of water on one wall in my room and its fine
yea maybe put the 20 gallon in the corner then youll have room for another tank under there too

About the 20 on the bottom of the 55 stand, I just remembered that some mental stands have cross pieces on the bottom level. I'm not sure if these will fit a 20 long though.

Any comments on using a hob filter on a 55?

No such thing as to much filtration
And for the 20 gallon long on the bottom I would buy and 4'x1' peice of plywood and lie the tank on top of the wood.

Thanks for the advice

I'm now considering a 75. Might as well go for something a little bigger if I'm going to be spending a lot of money anyway.

An AC500 is the same as a AC110, right? Would this HOB be big enough for a 75? or would I need additional filtration? Doctors Foster and Smith says its rated for a 110 gal tank and pumps at 500 gph. Also on an AC can you adjust the flow like a whisper?

Edit: Probably should mention my stocking. I was thinking of stocking a couple of the smaller bichirs. Might add something else later on if the bioload can handle it, but I'm not sure what.

the ac 110 would be what you want and there is no such thing as too much filtration......unless you have a vortex in your tank then i think is time to stop...lol. i would also just go for the 75g insted of 55g biger and wider. good luck with this though i say its a good idea for your stoking list idk what eles not a bichir kepper. have fun.
