Just wonder if anyone has had the experience of moving and taking a large number of tanks and fish with them. Might be moving soon and trying not to freak out about it. I've known a lot of people who've just sold everything off with plans to start backup after the move, but I feel like I've got too much time in on collecting and growing some of the cichlids I keep. Any advice or personal stories would be appreciated.

How large a fish room will you need to be tearing down and relocating?

How far is the new location from your existing home?

Will you have the luxury of setting up some of the tanks at the new location while still maintaining tanks at the old location?

About 10 tanks, two 125s being the biggest. About four hours away. Probably will be looking to move all of the tanks in one day, if possible, already have scaled back a little in preparation.

I've moved big fishrooms (50+ tanks) a couple of times. They key is to think it through and have a plan.

Don't try to tear everything down and set it all up permanently in one day.

If they've been allowed to purge (not eat for a few days), fish are fine in rubbermaids or big trashcans with sponge filters for some time.

Know where everything is going in your new place so that you don't have to figure it out on the fly.

When ever I move I do a water change the day before and I try to keep as much of the old water as possible. I use 5gal buckets w/ lids to house the fish during transport. The key is pre planning and doing it as quick as possible, only mover one tank at a time. If you're moving from well-city or visa versa saving as much water is good idea to keep stress down. Buy a trash can w/ lid, for the bigger tanks.
