Hi all, im moving my Green Spotted Puffer from my 20 gallon brackish tank, to my newly aquired 55 gallon so that he can stretch his ah..fins =) so my question is: Do I have to take an special precautions to putting him into his new salt water home? Will he be alright going straight into salt? Obviously i will let the tank cycle and setup for about a week. And ill let him set in a bag for the temp adjust...just being careful and making sure i dont kill him some how...im new to salt water.

Were it I, (and I have been mistaken) I'd give the new system a little longer on the cycle. If you can take him up slowly. If there is space to do so you might just get the levels right in the new tank and drip acclimate over a several day period. Not too hard to do if the tanks are anywhere near close to each other. Might be overkill but a week cycling the new tank, two weeks acclimating him to the pure salt and then a nice slow transition giving the new tank plenty of time to cycle in the meantime.

Hope it helps. Swim on.

i agree on the longer cycle. do you have any live rock in the 55?? if not id say add a few lbs for bacteria.

As far as adjusting the puffer, do a small water change with high saline water. Do this over the course of you 55 gallon cycle and you should be acclimated to full salt in no time. Going from brackish to full salt is much easier then fresh to salt lol.

keep up the good work, and lets see some pics when all is said and done!!

i raised my puffer to salt over a few weeks. i just raised the SG a little every week untill i was at 1.022 and then added some fully cured live rock. its that easy.

i had no problems. but you gotta make sure that the rock is fully cured though otherwise your tank will have another cycle when the puffer is in it and the puffer wont be happy about that:)

i suggest you set up your 55gal SW tank now and let it cycle on its own. while its doing its thing, slowly raise the SG in the 20gal brackish tank till it gets to the same SG as the 55gal which by this time should be cycled. test to make sure though. then you can drip aclimatise the puffer into his new tank.

what do you guys mean by drip aclimate? im a noob sorry! my 55 is already setup and cycling has been for 3 days now all i have is some live sand in the bottom and i got a few gallons of salt water from the lfs to start the good bacteria and iv already treated the 55 gallons with salt.

Drip aclimatisation is a method of aclimatising fish over a long period of time.

Not everyones sw or brackish tanks are the same sg or ph or even hardness ect. If we use this method, it reduces stress as it graduly let's the fish get used to your water.

I use air tubing and a valve so I can have 2-3 drops a second going into a container with the livestock in. Every now and then I will take some water out of the container so it doesn't overflow. Over the course of about an hour (depending on the drips per second), sometimes longer, the water will become the same chemically as your water. Then I refloat the container so the temperature is the same as the tank, and then release the fish.

Do a google search on it. You'll get all the info you need

And I would get some live rock in that 55. Water doesn't have that much bacteria in it. Bacteria prefer hard surfaces to multiply on (glass, décor ect) live rock is porous so it has a massive surface area for it's size, so more will grow. It will also provide you with some bacteria to start with. Throw a prawn in to really start them off. It will give the bacteria some food.
