hey guys just found this site a few days ago and love the diy section.

my question is:

i have a 55 gallon glass tank on a wooden stand. i want to move the tank to a different location in the room. and also use a different stand so i can put a tank on the bottom. this tank is the standard "walmart tank" (i got it for free) after pulling the rocks out how much water should i drain out? im going to move the tank during a water change which is usually 30 to 40%.

what kind of metal stand would be best for 2 55 gallon tanks. i only have an extra 20 right now but im always finding new.

Welcome to MFK!!!!

If you are going to physically lift the tank up and move it then you need to drain it completely. It's not worth risking cracking your tank. I have moved 55 gallon tanks on their stands across the room with about 30% of the water still in the tank by just slowly sliding them.

thats what i sorta thought, i wanted to avoid the stress to the fish from removing them from the tank. itll give me the chance to rearrange the tank anyway.

thanks

If you try to move with water in it you may stress the sealant and cause a leak. Much easier to drain the tank. then its the perfect time to wash it out, clean the gravel and all the other decor. The fish will notice you cleaned their room.

sweet... lol i was going to ask a similar question

I agree. I am moving my 55 to another wall to make more working room for my upcoming monster. And I am just gonna save 30% of the water (In buckets) and keep all my media in it (gravel included) and drain the tank completely .
