So I have been keeping fish for several years now. When I moved into this apartment, which I am on the third floor of, I took a risk and got a 180-gallon aquarium. Since then, I've wanted to expand into another couple of aquariums, but have really hesitated since I don't want to test the floors anymore. So I went to my landlord and asked her if there would be a first-floor apartment somewhere that I could move into. Also, I have been looking into a new house which I was closing on, but after inspections, it looks like that won't be happening.

I talked to her last week. She said she'll have a first-floor apartment, which I plan on moving into in the next couple of weeks. Recently, I've been searching Craigslist for some good deals. I came across a deal for about 10 filters, 4 aquariums (75-gallon, 55-gallon, 55-gallon column, and a 29? [or 55] gallon), 2 stands, Coralife lights for one of the tanks, lights for all of them, and glass covers for them as well. Also included were a bunch of extras like a syringe to take the eggs out of my mouth brooders and stuff. Ended up getting a heck of a deal from a real nice guy that had to move. So I have all of these things stored waiting on the move.

Right now I have a 180-gallon tank full of Tropheus with 6 or 7 Cyprichromis leptosoma "Tri-Color Yellow Head". I also have a 29-gallon tank with a bunch of breeding Trap Door Snails as well as Tiger Endlers. I only want to run a few tanks when I move, so here's what I am thinking:

180-gallon tank - Fluval FX5 filter. Breeding group of Frontosa with a natural looking set-up. Big piece of driftwood and rocks. Substrate will be regular aquarium gravel.

75-gallon tank - Magnum 350 filter. All of my Tropheus will go in here, with a bunch of rocks and crushed coral substrate.

55-gallon column tank - Rena XP3 filter. Will be a planted tank with a 4 discus and some tetras. Substrate will be Aquasoil Amazonia. I have Coralife lighting that I will probably have to get rid of because it is too long. I'll probably trade or buy lighting for this tank.

29-gallon tank - AC110 or AC70 filter. Don't know which. Will be my breeding group of Cyprichromis leptosoma "Tri-Color Yellow Heads." Probably will use whatever substrate is in here.

20-gallon tank - Whatever filter is on there now...Will have all of my trapdoor snails and breeding Tiger Endlers in here. Regular aquarium gravel with some java moss in there as well.

What are everyone's thoughts?

I would use your 20 gallon as a sump for your 180 in addition to the FX5. Here is why I say that. IMO, for good filteration and water quality you need to cycle the water in your tank at least 4 times per hour, which would mean you need a filter with a flow rate of 720 gallons per hour and your FX5 has a flow rate of less than 600. I say less than 600 because this measurement is taken on a brand new FX5 before any media is added and before any wear-in-tear on the filter itself. Once you add media, the flow rate will drop.

The FX5 is a great filter, I have one and love it. I just think you are gogin to need some more filteration for a 180 gallon tank.

I planned on using my FX5 and two AC110s in my 220, so I agree with Cliff. Maybe use a little more on the 180.

Also, depending on the fish, I think an AC110 in a 29 would create some pretty brutal current.
