I have an Eheim 2262 I have no pre filter, I also use a standalone large sponge and a moving bed filter.

My friend has an Eheim 2262, but he is using a sponge filter over the intake, no stand alone sponge or moving bed.

(my mate says he has to clean out the sponge every 2-3 days depending on how much he feeds, if he doesnt the sponge collapses completely restricting the flow of his canister)

I was wondering which is more efficient for filtration, the sponge or the moving bed? also would it be worth me doing as my friend does and having the sponge over the inlet to my eheim and not as a standalone?

My tank is 300l, and i am feeling that I have way too much filtration and was thinking about either removing the sponge, or the moving bed?

I will only comment on the 2262 and pre-filter sponge idea, I think it is a bad idea as I find the sponge will clog up and collapse as your friend has already experienced. I remember seeing a recommendation on Eheim's FAQ section about NOT using a sponge pre-filter for this model filter but I can't find it now.

You can use the sponge on the discharge side for bio but using it on the intake side will cause the pump to work harder and decrease its life.

What do you have in the 2262?
I have 4l mech pro, then 2.5 cm medium pad, then 2.5cm fine pad, then 11l marine pure 1.5inch spheres.

According to ceramedia, 2l of Marine pure spheres is used for 300l, for removal of ammonia and nitrite, 4l per 300l for removal of nitrates.....I have 11l in 300l.

My water quality is perfect I'm just wondering if I need my moving bed and sponge in the tank as well
