Hi everyone! I have some fish in a 75 gal right now and am planning to move them into a 150. The 150 gal already has treated water in it. I also have a new canister filter hooked up to the 150 already. I'm planning to move my overhead along with 4 large sponge filters from the 75 to the 150. I also have some driftwood and plants that I will transfer. Aside from adding in around half of the old water from the 75, is there any pre-cycling procedures I need to go through? I know the overhead and sponge filters already have the beneficial bacteria, so I'm assuming the new tank will already be cycled as well once I move the filters. Thanks for the tips and advice in advanced!

Just check with a test to make sure that it's cycled. Expect some stressed fish not to eat with the move.

No need to move the old water. Like you said all the good stuff is already in your filters.

I agree with Jaws. Just get the temp to the same as the 75 and make sure the water has been treated for chlorine/chloramine. I would still acclimate the fish though. Just to make the switch as stress free as possible. Some stress coat wouldn't hurt either.

Got it! Temperature was the same and I added some live water to make the fish feel more at home. They're already eating by the way! Thanks for all the tips and advice - greatly appreciated

Hello; Bear in mind that the beneficial bacteria (bb) basically feed on ammonia from the fish waste. So my practice has been to move some of the fish and the bb loaded media within a few hours of each other. At least do not wait days between moving on e or the other. A few hours has not proven to be an issue.

Another thing I do if time and circumstance allow is to move one fish at first and let it be the test for conditions in the new setup. Nearly all the time things go well and after a day I move other fish and more media.

The bb will be on the surfaces in the established tank such as the drift wood as well as the sponge filters and other media.

good luck
