About a year ago I had to move across the state for school and was planning how to move all of my fish and as cost effective as possible... I dont remember how or why, but I heard styrofoam coolers work well, so I went out and bought a pretty good sized one to move my fish which at the time included a 5"Fh, 3" Salvini, 3" Green Terror, and all my plecos...
So I catch everything and load up the tanks into the back of my car and place the styrofoam cooler inside a regular cooler in the back of my friends jeep and off we go..
Well I get a call from my buddy about halfway into the drive saying he is at a gas station.. the styrofoam cooler had broke/cracked... the water had drained out and there wasnt a plug in the real cooler
so all of the water had leaked out into the back of his jeep and my fish were laying on the bottom of the styrofoam cooler without water!!
At this point of the drive I was a good hour ahead of him (he drives like a senior citizen) and not about to turn around. He tells me that he found a hose at the gas station and he duct taped the hole for the plug in the real cooler and filled it up..
So I get to the new place about 2 hours a head of him and set up the tanks expecting all my fish to be dead by the time he gets there, but amazingly enough all but 1 pleco were alive when he got there!!
So I guess the lesson learned is dont trust styrofoam, and make sure the damn cooler has a plug for the hole!!
* On a funny side note, his jeep still stinks like fish water
