if you have the room, just get a larger rubbermaid container (more durable than the foam one) and fill it maybe 25% (use your own judgement as you will know the size of the container) with tank water and the gar should be fine for the trip. you can put a bubbler on the container if you like too. this has worked many times for me in transporting gars. hope that helps, and good luck--

what is the best (least stressful) way to get him out of the tank. hes grown about 4" since ive had him out last. thanks for the advice!

when i last moved my gar, i drained the water more than half way and i used a large net to get his head in, then i had a wet towel ready to wrap him in to put him into the rubbermaid container. good luck. i know some have used a large plastic bag to trap the gar in, that may be the best instead of a net.

A large plastic bag is best, just cut a few drain holes in the bag and it is pretty easy to coax the fish into it. Because I move gars alot I personally have what is best described as a "dolphin sling"...it is a piece of canvas 20" long X 10" wide attached to two 1/2 " PVC poles..Basic idea to this is to coax the fish under it then close it up and lift the fish out and move. This works very well but for your purpose I'd just stick with a big bag..

i was also thinking of using the bag method. last night i ran out and got a 40 gal rubbermaid container and am now trying to get a gameplan for the move. should i add anything to the water (salt) to make the move less stressful?

We moved all of the fish today. All went well. We decided to use large plastic bags and some rubbermaid containers. Thanks for all the help!
