hey everyone

just wondering the safest way to go about movin some larger (12" or so, small to some of you) fish for a state to state move? not sure exactly how to go about it. i've had a fish die from just a 15 mile move before, so i can't imagine how i'm going to pull a day or so... as much info as your time permits will help out a great deal.

i guess another question would be if i could keep the existing filtration sealed up, and install it without cleaning (fresh wet/dry system) and cycle the tank for half a day or so and be fine?

moving to another state where i won't know anyone isn't leaving me with too many options, and i don't want to get rid of my children.. i did a search, but dont feel like digging through a million posts when possibly some quick generous words would be appreciated. help my fish if anything!

I don't know about the fish, but the BB on the filters will start to die without food. CHOMPERS told me to feed my BB with the dirtiest gravel vac water I can get, when I was needing to store my BioMedia

I drove about 8 hours with some large fish including a 24" aro. They were in rubber made tubs with just a few inches of water and bio-balls floating on top. The fish were not fed for a week before and all was fine.

i had moved from NJ to FL about 1200 miles, 22 hours. i used a large rubbermaid. i used an ac power inverter and ran a small submersible fluval, an air pump and a heater. it worked out great. No casualties. actually did the move twice the same way. it worked for me, but maybe someone has a better idea.the heater was a tetra preset heater you can buy at walmart. not in picture.

the fish moved were. B. juruense, 2 jack dempsey, 1 oscar, assorted bichers, silver arowana, several plecos a few exodons, clown knife. and others.

That is the best way right there. Igloo coolers work well to - that way your temp holds.
Fast the fish several days prior to the move. Keep more air on it than you normally would. I've large fish/sharks almost coast to coast in the US doing it that way (more or less).

im looking at using sponge filters with battery powered pumps in a large cool box as its insulated. the sponge filters will have most of my bio media in. will be running about 6-8 pumps and a small outlet tube will be installed to allow CO2 to get out of the essentially sealed box.
the cool box is also large enough (~200 ltr) to house them for a while should a problem arise with their glass house. not permanently but for a couple/few of weeks at least. the trip will take about 10 hrs.

something like this should see you ok.
