I need a little help. I am such a newbie to the fish world. My daughter got a tiny dime sized fish she called Maggie. It killed the other fish twice it's size so it became my fish. This thing is a monster five years later. I bought a 75 gallon tank and rinsed the rocks, bought two Penguin 300 filters and now have to fill it. My issue is Maggie is at least a foot long and I am not sure how to transfer her into the new tank. I almost killed her when I went from a 10 gallon to 30 gallon. I knew nothing about fish. I know I have to let the water sit for awhile but how long? I have water tester but I really don't understand the whole cycle thing. Lol... I know, I know !!! Here is my other problem... The 30 gallon tank is leaking somewhere and I have to move her pretty quick. I have well water that I use for my 20% changes and Maggie loved the new water. My well water usually tests perfect for her. A nice high PH and the temperature is all I need to worry about. How should I move Maggie? Should I use a bucket? A plastic bag and let her acclimate? Should I try to save as much water from the 30 gallon to use in the 75 gallon? Ugh... I am so scared I will kill her! Help!

Thanks... Tina :D

Can you use the filter from the 30 gallon on the 75? That's where your good bacteria are at also any decorations you should move too. Until the new filters get seeded with bacteria I would run the 30s filter also then test your water and do water changes as needed till the other filters catch on.

+1. If you're going to use the old filter as well, you can transfer her as soon as the temp is right. Move everything from old tank into new tank except the water. Try to do a 30% water change every 3 days until new filter is seeded in a few weeks. To remove Maggie, first make sure the new tank's water is near the same temp as the 30gal, 2-3deg difference won't be a big deal. Drain the 30gal 1/2 way and try catching Maggie with a strong garbage bag. Just grab her and suspend her out of the tank as fast as you can, so she has less chances of running into the glass (or hitting it fewer time). Now go put her into the new tank. Keep the tanks light off while she calms down and settles in. Good luck.

X2 on the posts above

Also, moving deco over and substrate (even if its put in filter bags or panty hose) doesn't hurt either, just more beneficial bacteria to help seed the new tank.

Forgot to mention: make sure tank water of new tank is at target range before adding old filter, substrate, and decors. You don't want to shock those beneficial bacterials either. And just in case, check pH of both tanks' water just to be sure they are the same. Don't want to risk a pH shock either.

Is there any way you can add hot and cold water all at once to save time on equalizing the temp. We have a asset up that allows this it is simply a Y hose that is attached to the hot and cold faucets.

I have been considering buying the Auqeon water changer and using it for my water changes and using it to fill too. If anyone has one I would love to know the size of the hose.
