Bright sparks,
I'll be moving fish from in-office 100 to in-house 230gal over the next 4~6days, including a 14" silver arowana. He/she's not particularly skittish, but...
Issues in mind include:
a) Capture: getting our girl out of where she is and
b) Travel: Barring church traffic, the journey is <30 minutes but there's a rough 3'd world mountain road for >half of that.
Capture:
I've not been able to find/buy/borrow a soft rubber-coated fisherman's net, but hearing of pillowcase or a sheet options. For sheet, thinking to i) keep fish in sheet into box, tightened under the set lid "whale sling" style for transport, or ii) with excess sheet left in the box for splashing/jumping, however fish might become wrapped into the sheet = injury?
I've also got rolls of mozzy-mesh, but that seems like it'd be rougher than cotton.
Travel:
Intended transport box is the 16" square styrofoam box she arrived in 14-months ago: soft'ish sides, tight lid, adequate length, albeit just. This box has done this trip 3x with other fish (much smaller cats & loaches etc., 2" water depth). The aro is ~4" tall, so thinking to fill only to 5" & put layer of bubble-wrap at surface to reduce slosh/splash & head-impact to lid if she jumps. I'm hoping to also go "bagless" for the arowana, mainly because I'd have no idea where I'd find such a bag. Alternative could be a 50gal polyethlene garbage bag, possibly to go into box - is dark going to be good/calming? Certainly the high-sides of the bag (vs box) won't let her jump out during catch/release phases.
Tank is also to move, so I can/will be removing water for at least some of this tank's catches. If using a sheet for the arowana, might remove that fish before removing >30% water, though - she might be less apt to drive herself into the bottom if there's water. After and/or as the aro comes up, I'll also be dealing with half-dozen 4" silver-dollars; a catch that I'm also not looking forward to... I really hate handling my fish.
Receiving tank is up & running & more-or-less cycled incl. old water, filter media & gook, + sand, plants, snails, ostracods, amphipods, annelids set though likely not yet established.
Thoughts?
Thanks
