Hi all this is my first post here and already looking for help, I have 4 red bellies in a 25 gallon tank, they have been in it for 9 weeks I do regular water changes as I know tank is to small ie 2 gallon everyday so water quality is good and in 12 days it's a complete change.

The fish are eating well they get fresh prawn mussel and have been having fresh turbot this week, they are looking really good.

I have a new tank coming in the next week or so, problem I have is it has to go were the old tank is now, so it means emptying this one forst and then setting up the other, would they be OK in a 20 inch tank for 24 hours or so well I swap over ? also they are growing fast will they still continue to grow or will the 9 weeks in small tank have affected them ? I have lost more to ask but that will do for now LOL thanks.

Welcome to MFK.

The only concern I would have with the tank change is the new tank cycling. Reds are pretty tough, and should be able to handle it, if you have to risk it. How big are they? They should be okay in a 20 inch tank for a day if they are still tiny guys.

Some people have reported stunted growth in reds housed improperly, however they will still grow. If they are under 3 inches they still have the potential to get 3+ times that size.

I think your best option for moving the tank is siphoning some of the water out of the current 25 and moving it (its not that heavy) and setting it on the floor or somewhere else. Then refill it of course. Leave them in there until the new tank is cycled and ready.

okay-heres what ya gotta do-go get a big tupperware style tote-at least 20 gallons, and syphon your water into the tote and add the fish-you need to in the least-put a bubbler in the tote with them or they wont last very long in still/dead water.now move the old tank and set up the new.DO NOT-change the filter media yet!It has all the good stuff-bacteria etc that they need-now fill up the new tank once its in place and dont fill it all the way yet.just enough so the filters can start running and make sure you have enough room for all that water you got saved in the tote.Okay-now you got the new tank in place-filters running and now its time to start a syphon going into the new tank from the tote-leave fish in there until its just above their back fins and you should be able to lift and pour the fish and the rest of the water in the tank.If its too heavy still for you to lift-tilt the tote to one side so you have just the corner with the fish and the little bit of water and you should be able to lift it no problem. You are now all done-sit down and have a drink:chillpill:Oh-let the filter run for a week or 2 b4 you start changing the inserts etc.good luck

Hi and thanks for the replies 3 of them are 3+ now and still growin they eat a lot and one is a bit smaller he is getting picked on, I think that with the water changes I have been doing they should be ok growth wise I hope, I think I will go with your idea and move the other tank should NOT be to heavy once some water siphoned off.

My new set up will be 60 gallon tank as I can't fit a bigger one in plus costs in UK, I will have sand substate, bogwood, and I have java fern growing on bogwood, also going to have some amazon swors, and amazon frogbit a floatin plant to keep the light off the fish, I would like to have the water slightly tinted brown is there anything that can be added ? thanks again.

Will try and post photo of fish later.

60 Gal should be fine for 4 Reds as long as you take very good care of the water.
If you want a brown tint, you can add driftwood to the tank and it should leech tannis into the water, making it slightly brown. Sometimes store bought driftwood is treated and will not turn your water brown.
There are also chemical additives they sell to tint your water darker.

PS: Nice tank!

Hi again well I have made the move to the new tank, I put all the filter medium out of the old tank into the new filter transfered a lot of the sand and bogwood and live plant, the tank had been cycling for a week but I had to get the other tank out of the room, so not an ideal situation but all seem well water parameters fine and fish doing OK heres a photo of new tank.
