So I'm possibly moving in a few months and was just wondering if anyone had any tips or handy tricks to moving at tank?
It's just a small one at 46 gal. Freshwater. I was just planning to split up my fish into two big buckets, try to save most of the water and leave the substrate in the tank. I'm moving about...20 mins across town. Any help would be great thanks.

yer going in the right direction.. depending on how much substrate you have you might want to put in in a bucket/s insted.. this will make the tank lighter and lower the risk of it breaking/poping a seam while moving it

I would do everything that you would except I would make sure the substrate isn't heavy enough to damage the tank. What I did one time with my 55 is get a thick piece of plywood and slide the tank on it. Make sure the plywood isn't too large. Have the plywood be about 2 inches longer than your tank on all sides. If the plywood sticks out any longer, the wood might break. Then you and your friends can just carry the plywood with the tank on top. I wouldn't do this for tanks larger then 55 gallons. The Doctor.

You really dont need to lug water around . I would fill a bucket full and put the filter media in it with a lid because thats where most of your bb lives. but other than that sounds like you know what your doing. I moved 7 tanks 3 months ago and didnt lose 1 fish

K sweet. Thanks for all the tips so far. It seems moving a tank's pretty general. Never thought of the plywood trick that could come in handy. I only have about 40 lbs of substrate so shouldn't be too much of a problem. Glad you reminded me of the filter media too. Might have left that drained for the move. Thanks for the help.

I just did this last month buy a two or so rubbermaid 20g containers put all the substrate and decorations in one keep it wet but you dont need water. put all your fish with enough water in the other if you got canister filters just keep the water in em for the media if hob keep media in tank water.

Now move.

what I did next was set my filters on the rubbermaid container for a day or so as moving was hectic and had alot going on plus gave me plenty of time to set up. I did partial water changes while fish where in the rubbermaid to get my fish used to the new water. I didnt lose any fish

Just make sure you prepare and I recomend breaking down the whole tank it will be alot easier to move and less risk of breaking.
