My house.
So my fish have finally out-grown my little 50gal tank and I am moving my Oscar and a few of his buddies to a 120gal tank, but I am not sure exactly how to do the switch. The new tank is going to have a new filter and new substrate so it wont have any of the old bacteria from the old tank. I was just wondering if anyone knew any tricks so I didn't have to start over and do a new fishless water cycle. Any tips would be appreciated.

just do a 50% waterchange on your 50g but put the water in your new tank.

I thought of that to but would that be enough or could I do that maybe a few times times over a period of time?

I don't like the idea of just adding water from the old tank. Most of your bb is in the substrate and on the filter media. Take as much filter media as you can from the old tank and put it in the new filter.

Moving the filter media from the old tank to the new one as stated before is a definite must. Transferring the water won't do much of anything for you but transferring some if not all of the substrate will help. If you don't plan on using your old substrate in your new setup you can always bag up a few pantyhose full of it and and set those in the new tank for a week or 2. Decorations, rocks, plants, etc. will all work as well (surface area for the good stuff).

Keep an eye on your parameters for the first week or two and bump up water changes as/if necessary.

Good luck on the move and make sure to post up some pics!

Alright thanks for the advice and I definitely will post some pictures.

I've done it countless times and have never had an issue.

As stated, just using the water from the old tank won't do much of anything. Actually it would probably be worse than using new water just because there would already be some waste in it, and little to no BB transfer would be accomplished.

Just follow the above tips for using the old tank's filter media/deco etc.
