Hello everyone, I'm not sure if I've ever posted on this forum or not. Either way, thanks for having me and letting me lurk for a while.

I keep black Piranhas, but a buddy that was "taking care" of them killed 2 and left the third barely living. I can't afford to get more Piranhas right now so I found a nice looking 6-7" Midas/Devil (I don't know or care which for sure) And he has a 75 to himself. He's still settling in, but I was wondering what advice there is for a cichlid newb. I have almost no experience with these guys. He will probably never have tank mates, though I may try some SDs to give him something to chase.

And sort of advice is appreciated, and thanks for having me!

Mike

First off, congratulations on owning your first Midas/RD. They truly are remarkable fish with incredible personalities. Yes, you are also correct in that he/she will probably never allow tank mates (at least Cichlids). It's really hit or miss with both dithers and/or Plecos. I've keep some RD's who payed no attention to them, but I've also owned RD's who would murder any other living organism in the tank (including large snails). Be sure to provide a good Cichlid staple pellet and keep the water clean. Other than that, they will grow relatively fast and become more aggressive as they age. They don't call them glass bangers for nothing. Have fun!

Thanks for the replies! Im pretty excited. I wanted a Jag and found a big one, but I just couldn't bring myself to put one in a 75 and can't be sure that I will be able to upgrade.

I usually feed my Ps fresh Shrimp and tilapia stuffed with pellets. Will this guy take raw prepared fresh fish and shrimp or should I just stick with pellets? Thanks again folks.

The midas/rd will eat pieces of shrimp and fish filets. I feed pellets as a staple and shrimp/fish filets maybe once a week or so when I feed my Ps.

Chances are the midas/rd won't let anything else in the tank.

Welcome to the dark side! Never had one personally but I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with him. As far as diet goes, will he take fresh fish? I'm sure. Should it be his main diet? That's alittle more tricky. I'd recommend a mix but make sure pellets are the majority. I spoiled my fish with frozen food and now I'm struggling to get them to touch pellets. Sure Midas/RD aren't nearly as picky but something to look out for. Again, good luck and have fun!

Hey Welsher, I know that name. Good to see a familiar face in here. Maybe I should try my RRS with him?

Thanks for the replies everyone. It probably won't be a staple, but I wanted to make sure he wouldn't just leave it on the bottom of the tank haha.

nice choice, amphs rock, just feed him as wide a variety of food as he will accept, no mammal or bird meat tho, insects/fish/seafood/pellets/rivershrimp ect...

got any pics?

edit: mine are pretty picky, dont be surprised if they dont accept some foods.

No photos yet, he's still settling and he was not in the best situation where he was at before. I'm gonna give him a few days of chilling before I give him the lights and all that. He looks great, but he was in a 55 with another Devil his size and a breeding pair of JDs, so he's getting used to clean water and space. Wish me luck that he settles in well, ha.

cool, what colour is he?
