so im moving tommorow to an apartment about a mile away, and i have a 75g with the stock listed in my sig... and im just curious if you guys can see anything wrong with the steps im going to take to move everything

- drain about 4 1/2 gallons into 5g bucket throw in fake plants and such so they can feel secure during the move.

- move sponge filter from tank to bucket and hook up air pump

- get bichir, knife and catfish out of tank and into the bucket, secure the lid (holes drilled so not air tight)

- drain and load tank, stand and filters, into truck for the about 10min drive

once at the new place

- setup tank on stand and run electrical wiring

- fill with tap water and add prime, mixing with some spare PVC pipe (no way for me to transport more than about 5g of existing tank water)

- hook up filters and get them running

- re-intoduce fishies back into tank...

my main question is:
1. after re-filling the tank, would it go into a cycle even with the established filters running on the tank?

if you guys see anything that i could do to make the move easier on the fish it'd be greatly appreciated

Possible mini cycle but I doubt it, just keep an eye on the ammonia. I would definatley add moving the substrate from tank to tank (whiile keeping it wet) to the list. The tank water isn't going to do much for you so there is no reason to stress about bringing it. I would however suggest moving the fish in seperate containers with minimal plants, etc. in each container.

Keeping the BB alive in the filter is also an important move, and can be done by removing the media and moving it in a tank water bucket as well.

Also make sure to keep an eye temperature on the container that will be a temp housing for the fish, airating a container with that little water will def cool it down quite a bit.

Sounds good, but if I were you I would fill more 5 gallon buckets of water or large plastic totes/bins with the water already in the 75g. That way your not basically doing a 90% water change (getting rid of the other 70.5 gallons in there now and putting in 70.5g of fresh tap with prime after you moved in). That is just something I would do though...otherwise you aren't keeping much good bacteria that is in your water right now. & when a sudden, large water change occurs, it causes such a drastic shift in the makeup of the water that the fish often cannot tolerate it. Those that don't die immediately are stressed and may succumb to disease over the next few weeks or months. I've also heard some BGKs and other knife fish can be sensitive to changes in water conditions which I believe to be true.

You're fine.. When I moved I transferred from a 90 to a 180. I had canisters in the 90 and all I did was move the bio in the 90 and put it into the 180's sump. I had 180 gallons of new water and I was completely fine. Just remember to raise the temp of the tap water and acclimate your fish again.

my filters are a Eheim 2217 which i was planning on filling with tank water and closing the valves to stop it from leaking,

and 2 Fluval C4's which i will remove the media and put in some tank water.

ohh and i have sand as a substrate and it will all be going as well... the only new thing that will be added to the tank at the new place is water... i'll definetly keep an eye on temp, that is one of my concerns as well

I'm typing this from my phone, so please excuse and auto corrects...

Made the move Tuesday afternoon and spent the rest of the day/night setting the tank back up and acclimating the fish after the move... As of Wednesday night everyone is still alive and swimming, and all have eaten since the move. So as far as I can tell everything is going to be fine...

No internet at the new place yet so I'll be posting pics as soon as i can get my laptop back online
