Hi all,

I have a couple of new kribs in my 38g tank and they have been displaying behaviour consistent with being in the "mood" I think perhaps the female (Mrs Smith) may have already laid some eggs as both her and the male have become very agressive and guarded over a broken pot ornament and a hidy cave.

I've attached pics of the happy couple tag team guarding their little spots.

Mrs Smith's at the pot while Mr Smtih is guarding the cave.

Enjoy :D

Get It On

congratulations !
I've had a pair of kribs kill off everything in a 55 once they started breeding.
It's time to rethink your filtration so you don't suck up the fry. Try a couple of sponge filters or box filters. Keep them off the bottom of the tank.
You could also just move the pair to a 10 gallon that has some clay pots and plants.(no gravel or power filters)

Good luck.

I was racking my brains as to what I was going to do with the babies once they hatched and then realized I had a spare 7g tank.... This is the biggest tank I have available to use.

My bf is thinking i'm on drugs cause i'm sooooo excited......These nonfishy ppl just don't understand. :screwy:

I noticed you've said i could move the pair to a 10g I am wondering if my 7g would be okay for this or if it would only be big enough to house the babies?????

My other question being...If no substrate, how on earth am I gonna keep the plants anchored?

Cheers guys!

my male and female had fry last year 14 made it them i acidentaly boiled them. so i only have 2 left and the parents died also female for the male wanting to take over the "buisness" and the male of old age. my male and female from them just spawned but i disturbed them to much and they ate them :(

Bad news....eggs all gone...

I think someone might have gotten a little hungry.....

They are still at it, tryin again for more babies but I'm thinking since they are actually in the community tank that the chances of any fry are pretty slim.

Thinking about getting them there own tank.

Could have been predation, especially if you have any catfish.

Were they a nice light pink or did they turn white or foul over at any time? Reason I ask is that I had 2 females go through all of the courting and actually lay eggs, but without a male to fertilize they were toast within 12 hrs. Doh! (Learned my lesson and went and got a male.)

IMHO the 7 gallon will be a bit on the small side for parents plus fry. Once the eggs hatch you will also be harder pressed to keep up water quality and stress to a minimum......

My advice would be to set up the 7 gallon with water from the parents tank, and get a sponge filter running in there. When the parents next lay eggs, remove the pot to this tank and keep an airstone nearby for circulation. It takes away from observing the parenting behaviour, but at least you'll raise fry!! (I've raised hundreds of african jewels like this.)

Option 2: Buy a Krib only tank ~ 15 gallons with a sponge filter.

BTW, nice fish!
Good luck.
