Hi guys

I was wondering if any of you could shed some light on this as my tank setup is perfect!!

PH - 6.9, ammonia 0 ppm, nitrite is about 0.1 ppm (slightly off colour than 0) and nitrate is about 0.5 ppm

i vac out the mess every day to keep it clean for my guys tanking about 10L of water out at while doing it and replacing and i do a water change of about 25% every 2 weeks.

None of my other fish are acting unusual - they all seems to be fine and so was sharky last night when i checked on them all before bed (about 12) but when i came to feed them at 6 this morning he was at the bottom:cry: he has been eating flake food since i got him about 1 month ago - he didnt like anything else and he was in fresh water with no salt approx 4 inches long.

Its horrid that i dont know why he died!

Any insight into this - your thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks.

We'll need more info, what size tank are we talking about, what kind of fish was it, what tank mates were with Sharky?

tank size is 200L - he was a white tipped shark catfish and he is with leopard plec, royal plec, bristlenose plec, 2 synos, 2 pictus cats, 4 bala sharks, 4 corys, 2 guppies, 1 gourami and 8 tetras... all my fish are still small with only the leopard plec being 9 inches long.

is sharky a bala shark??

Hexanematichthys seemanni (Arius jordani) Colombian Shark, White-Tipped Catfish, Silver-Tipped Catfish is the species of cat I think the OP is referring to. I always thought they where brackish water fish, but according to what I read online they can be acclimated to fresh but often times develop lethal skin conditions when kept in pure freshwater. To the OP there's still alot of info. your not posting that would help in determining what happened. You've posted no pics or even description of the fish(as in if there where any outward injuries, bumps, blisters, etc...) for any of us to even be able to render a guess as to what happened. You also haven't told us where you bought him and in what water conditions he was kept in previously and whether you spent the necessary time to acclimate him to a complete freshwater set-up. Now I'm only saying this since every LFS I've ever been in has kept them in brackishwater set-ups. I don't know if that's the case in your area, again as you've offered no info. so I don't know if that's a determining factor behind the death. Many brackishwater fish will appear to be fine when introduced into completely freshwater set-ups and eventually die, due to a number of factors that may not be outwardly apparent, but the primary cause being they weren't kept in suitable conditions(ie:brackishwater). I personally made such errors in the past when I was less informed. Again I don't know if that's the case here, but I'm throwing it out there as a suggestion and saying if you want more help please add additional info. so we can help.

he was kept in fresh water - no salt added either... he didnt have any marks on him at all... his skin was perfect and was swimming about happily at 12 last night but when i cam down 6 hours later he was dead. he was bought from white moss nursery in widness and he was kept in fresh water there too.

he didnt have a swollen tummy - underneath was perfectly white and his whiskers were whole and fine so he hasnt been fighting with anything. I found him near my driftwood near the little home that my syno lives in. he has been known to be a bit of a bully to other fish that go near him and he has made bite marks on my other syno but like i said - sharky had no makrs on him at all - i thoroughly checked him over last this morning.

hope this helps...

Shane

I'm guessing if its a brackish water fish, then there is a chance that the freshwater could have killed him over time from being in the wrong environment...

I know when i first started out i bought what was called a freshwater eel... obviously without the proper research it didn't last long and ended up turning up dead one day with no obvious signs of why it may have died... then after i researched i realized it was called a G.tile and that it actually needed brackishwater to survive...

Anyway, hopefully you'll find work out what might have caused the problem with some help from the members here...
