hello everyone, i have been looking into getting a puffer for a few months(reading, reading, reading), and i so when i saw some SAP's at my lfs i jumped on it. i bought one for my 20L and when i went to buy some MTS snails they didnt carry them. i called another lfs and they said that they are now illegal! SOOOOOO how do i get some and are the illegal? i have about 30 ghost shrimp but he doesnt seem to eat them.His/her teeth are visible and ive read how to trim, but HOW can you tell WHEN to trim them?

-thanks-puffer pupil

I don't think MTS (malaysian trumpet snails) are good for SAPs... Their too hard (only reserved for larger puffers). I think you're better off getting Ramshorn and common snails.

Accurate, stay away from MTS.

You can find those pest pond snails on many plants at the LFS. Petsmart always seems to have a ton of them in most oftheir tanks. You'll also have to set up a small tank for SNAIL BREEDING & in spite of hf how many snails you feed to that puffer, it will still need regular TEETH TRIMMING every 4-6 months

Pufferpunk I have a question. If you have a puffer on a heavy feeding of crustaceans why would you still need teeth trimming. They don't have us humans in the wild to trim there teeth. Not trying to be a smart***, just asking a legitimate question for my personal knowledge.

We figure there is more than just snails they use in the wild to keep their teeth trimmed.

That is why I said heavy feeding of crustaceans, ie: crayfish, mussels. snails. I feed my fahaka crayfish, snails silverside heads, haven't found frozen mussels her locally. Would I still need to trim my fahaka?

Sorry for derailing your thread Movitt.

Fahakas don't have the same dentistry issues as the SAPs, although I was called in to make a trimming on one.
