So, I have a very curious tank. The tank is comprised of one (almost positive) alligator gar that is about 10 inches or so long, one pleco that has never moved...ever. One feeder fish that has survived two months (I'm not kidding... they won't eat him. This thing is about the size of a nickel AT BEST and he just swims freely) and one RTC that is about 6 inches at best. Here's the thing... I once rescued a gar to whom I bestowed the name Bandit (thanks to Jerry Reed's song/Burt Reynolds movie; RIP Jerry) from a horrible dealer and attempted a recoup but the damage was too severe (missing fins, poor coloration, scarring, etc). However, my gar at the time would often help it out... like it would mother it in a manner of speaking. Even during feeding time it would chase big fish and then school the other fish towards Bandit, who's flipper loss made mobility very difficult. Now, he died. But, fast forward, yesterday I bought a beautiful Longnose gar about 4 in long and with the most beautiful coloring I've ever seen. last night I put him in my tank and he acclimated well but this morning he is completely gone. The thing is... no RTC could eat him without choking to death. Is it possible...was it a combined murder? There are no signs of him anywhere.... opinions...help? Sniff. Please keep lectures to a degree of informative and refrain from pointless condescending. I thought it was big enough to survive and learned. I have the financial loss and experiential gain. Just want to know who most likely murdered him and find ways to be able to have multiple gar at once.

Yes, THE RTC ATE HIM....My 6 inch RTC ate my 5 inch hujeta gar, my 4 inch jack dempsey and this picture below is my 5 inch Umbee inside of him. the Hugeta gar was folded in half in his belly...i know it seems unlikely, but they are garbage bins. It was my 1st RTC and last RTC...he lives in a large pond in Beverly Hills now...anyways, here is the Umbee in the RTC

I'd do a thorough search of the tank, see if he squeezed in somewhere; you'd be surprised at the places fish can get into. Then take a good look at your fish, a 4 inch gar should make a noticeable bulge and it should be easy to discern who ate him if anybody did.

Another possibility is he jumped. I had a Gar who once jumped and I wasn't able to find him for days. He had managed to jump from his tank into a small waste pail I had several feet away from the tank close to my computer desk. I thought I had done a thorough search of the tank and room but days later as I was emptying the pail I found he had somehow slipped between the pail and the trash bag that I lined it with and was neatly curled along it's the pails edge which made him very hard to see.

My 8 inch red tail ate a 6-7 inch vampire tetra. Gars jump, and since they can breath they may travel far distances. Your gar may be under a couch or behind the tank.

Did your RTC look like it had a full belly? If it did, he ate it. If it didn't, like many have already advised...I would start looking around the tank if their was any opening where it could have jumped out of.
