State of chaos
No fisherman can resist a 5 pound fish that can be found anywhere in its range, jumps like a tarpon, dives like a trout, and runs like a musky.
So 5 pound Striped Mullet in the Punta Gorda canals are very appealing. But we tried bread, banana, in-line spinners, cut fish, dry oatmeal, cheerios, and shrimp but not even turned one. What can I use? Not snag hooks, i want to release. Cast net is my last option, i want to use hook and line. What do I use?

Cast nets since they're planktivores. I've seen small schools of mullet being netted off South Beach on Staten Island.

i thought you were talking of shad but really mullet are plpanton and detritus feeders.

I fish for mullet on Rod and reel all the time when they come up in the creek to spawn....

We chum out with range cubes in about 1ft of water, and fish with peeled shrimp for bait. On #2 mustad hooks, floats set a few inches under the surface. they normally just tap the float, so set the hook when it is the most active.

A pic of a mullet I caught on rod and reel.

Now...with that being said, I keep mullet as pets in my 700gl stock tank and they love bread balls. just take a loaf of bread with you and chum out with some, and use some as bait and see if that works.

Hope this helps,
GG
