on a recent collection trip to north carolina to try and stock my latest project i net a small silver mullet in the brackish waters i was collecting in

i was plaing to releae him for i doubted he would be a good aquarium fish, but i wanted the challenge, so now i have him in full fresh with the otehr critters from that trip and cant figure out how to feed him

anyone ever tried to keep mullet before? ever had any success? if noone has ever tried this how about ideas? ive tried both flakes and bloodworms without ANY feeding response

i think beceause of the way they feed in the wild (suspension and substrate filtration that it may be impossible

anyone have any ideas?

I have not even thought about keeping these, but how about trying some live foods like ghost shrimp, daphnia, live worms, etc.?

we need pics.....try flys, worms and ants ect. good luck and if he is big you might have to get feeder fish

pics to come :)

yea, i have to get some black worms for the gaggle of little american eels i came back with too, i will definetly offer them to mr mullet. im still trying to get a defenitive species id on him too

hopin hes the kind that get HUGE so that he can share the tank with the big guys :) hes only like maybe 4 inches right now

Try the blackworms. I have heard the only fish that won't eat blackworms is a dead fish.

I've seen mullet in the wild feeding on the surface scum of still water (so fine flakes, goldfish rather than tropical kind, should be feasable). I have also trapped small mullet using bread as bait and the mullet at the same location (local park) actively feed on any bread the ducks miss.

i read about them eating bread, but never actually seen it myself, despite years of fishing them back west in cali (the massive 40lbers we have back there are sooooo tempting) and have never had them even take a look at the abundarnt chum i pour into the water. i have been trying flakes, but he hasnt taken much notice. i will keep it up and try blackworms tommorow. maybe hell be more settled by then and might pay more attention to my offerings.

im just worried cuz i caught him early in my week long trip so hes been without food for a good week. unless he ate some detrius out of the holding cooler i was keeping him in.

Any Pics yet?
