i currently have a 12-14" florida gar in with a 20-22" clown knife, 12" and 14" oscars, 2 6" pacu, and a 10" pictus catfish will be adding a venz pike once it grows enough and the possibility of a red devil. right now there in 8x4x1 but im in the process of building the frame work for my 8x8x2, and i was wondering how many or possibly what other kinds of gar i could try hopefully sucessfully with these fish in this size pond?

First off those tankmates are not good tankmates for gar at all. If I were you, I'd devote your big tank to a species only tank, or make sure you have proper tankmates for the gar. As for other gar that can be housed with your Florida, you can always get more Floridas. Mine are always caught laying right next to each other and swimming together.

I have said this already many times before, but if you really like your gar, I would get him his own tank as soon as possible and away from the pacu as well as those oscars. Cichlids can be agressive, especially during feeding time and you may not be able to get your gar the food he needs, not to mention the cichlids could spook him into the glass with the potential of breaking his back. As for the pacu, once they get a little bigger, they have potential of doing some major damage or possible death to your gar. I have experienced this myself unfortunately. She bit 4 out of 5 of my gars snouts and broke parts of them off. Luckily they are healed now, but if I hadn't noticed right away, or hadn't gotten rid of the pacu, they'd all be dead.

i read one of your prior posts about the nose biter, ive already thought to myself that pacu prolly dont taste that bad seens how natives to the amazon eat them all the time. there is no glass for the gar to slam into. its a pond. my current gar was kind of a suprise gift. i went to pick up the clown knife and came home with the gar and catfish too. the gar currently is crooked from breaking its back previously, and my oscars dont seem to bother it, even around feeding time. they just seem thankful to be out of a 40 breeder they shared at the lfs.

cichlids, pacu's, and even catfish should not be housed with gars. due to aggressiveness. just follow the advise that jordan said and you should be good.

It doesnt have to be glass...that was just an example.
