So, I am setting up the fish room, and want to get a UV filter.

I am wanting at least a 120W - 160W UV.... though can't help but wonder would I be able to hook up multiple 57W to acheive the same thing?

I hate paying retail (especially in Canada as it is ridiculous compared to most pricing in the USA) and noticed that I can easily find 40W UV & 57W sterilizer's used, though attempting to get a 120W or larger is difficult, and they usually will not ship.

For example - the 120W Aqua UV just uses 3 40 Watt bulbs, so i see no differnece, expect for perhaps the housing is "better" in some fashion.

Understood.... I believe. The longer the water is in contact withthe water, the more sterilization (to a degree)....

I currently have 3000 gallons rung, with another 3000 in 8 months... Unsure if this helps.

The longer the water is in contact with UV light, the more effective the UV will be.

I am having a hard time understanding your post... you have a 3000 gallon tank?

960 + 720 + 720 + 360 + 240 and some 160's.

I am currently plumbing everything into 1 system - thus, only need 1 uv (or, 3 uv's as per how I want to do it)

I would think that..... there is only so much time that the water can be in contact with the UV, in that it does benefit anymore.

On the 120W & 160W set ups, they have 3 bulbs - could I not achieve the same goal, by splitting the return three ways - through three separate 40W sterilizer's?
