Hi all,

Just set up a tank for a Musk turtle to move in too.

I've done a bit of research, knowing that small and large gravel can pose health problems, and have noted that the most recommended substance to use is sand.

Now, I bought some tank sand from Pets@home.... and I've washed it til the water run clear, swished my hands around in it and proceeded to wash it through again.. added it too the tank and left it a few days with the filter running, and then re-homed my turtle, Within an hour it was milky.

now i was expecting sand too be kicked up.. but not to this extreme. anyone got any suggestions?

Cheers

I've heard that people are using Children playing sand, do you think that this would be a better choice of product?.. rather than one designed for fish. I know it sounds quite a nooby question, I've just never had this much of a problem with milky water.

Don't use play sand, it is awful. Use pool filter sand. Local pool shops should have it, I got mine from menards or home depot

My pool filter sand took about 10 mins to clean out with my hose and its always settled. Didnt cloud the water one bit.

Just from my experience but turtle tanks with substrate are a lot harder to keep clean than bare or slate/tile bottom tanks.

Hmm, I see your point, I shall look into this, as It would allow me to build a basking spot too, and have a unique tank design. I should be able to get some from a Garden center, cheaper than a Pet shop.. is there any risk too this?.. from my understanding it's only the price tag and more need of washing aspect?.
