Anyone ever tried incorporating Zebra Mussels (or any other mussels) in a filtration setup? Just curious after reading an article about how they've cleared the water in the great lakes (and destroyed local ecosystem).

Considering the legalities and problems of zebras, I hope no one does :D.

But yes to other freshwater clams, but they have their drawbacks too... what goes in must come out. Good W/C's help.

Biggest problem is having enough food in the water to support them without a big algae problem.

That, and they aren't very exciting.

Please do not even suggest the idea and or concept of using, obtaining or entertaining the idea of moving around Zebra mussels. These suckers have cost us billions of dollars in damage and control and have altered the entire ecosystem of the southeastern great lakes to an almost unrecognizable condition. They are Highly ILLEGAL and immoral to even think about. (Call it a thought crime)..

Native mussel are imperiled across the board and are in most, if not all, cases HIGHLY illegal to take. (Many are federal and state protected) Do not mess with them unless you have proper permits and experience. These animals require specific feeding and care that is not easy to duplicate in captivity. They are not just crap feeders and will not filter your tank for you. Most likely they will just die and kill everything in the tank.

We got these things as problems out here. Ya they clean the water, but they are also jamming up our water pipes etc etc.

Sorry to bring up such a sore subject.

I certainly wouldn't consider trying to obtain Zebra Mussels and extend their range. BUT, in an area already infested, pulling some out of the environment at large and confining them in an acrylic sump doesn't seem SO bad (I know nothing of the legality).

Really I was just curious if anyone had tried.

Just wanted to point out that they could spread eggs and or small clams with water changes.

Why not buy a fishing boat and make some money while helping the ecosystem.

Thats the problem is the water changes. A few escape and now are in your pipes. Sewers flood now they are in the street getting a free wide to the nearest river. I dunno about there but here thats a huge fine

Mussels used as bio filters as a concept work quite well. Large freshwater mussels would be great with oscars for example or to help control green water on tanks getting direct sunlight. I almost always have some somewhere in one of my tanks.

Also a good way to breed bitterlings (fish) for those interested.
