Hi,

I gave my puffer some frozen mussels. But on the label it says for saltwater fish. This is the San Fransisco Bay brand. I have also seen Squid and Plankton by the same brand and they say for salt water fish. Is it ok to feed this to fresh water puffers?

I have never seen such a warning, however I buy mine from Walmart for 3 dollars a couple dozen.

My Dwarf puffers and Green spots LOVE plankton!

I have never heard of such a restriction on foods like that, for puffers anyway, but I am pretty sure it is ok for puffers...but please what until someone else says it is ok..:)

Okay, just want to check are these mussels made/processed specially for fish and not human consumption??? coz i find it funny that the packaging would say its for Saltwater fish...

Anyway, normally i feed de-frosted Human Mussels to my puffers which i'm guessing should more or less be the same thing??? just de-frost in a cup of fishtank water and you should be good to go???

But wait for some one like PP or another person with a bit more knowledge about this brand to come in and give you their opinion as i'm a bit thrown off by the brand and what the label says...

I see labels on frozen foods that say for both fresh and salt water. And I see some that say for saltwater, and some that say freshwater. I don't see what the problem would be, other than maybe some salt content. Brine shrimp is salty, but is fed to FW fish all the time.

But I will wait to make sure. BTW here is what it looks like:

Says for Saltwater. But it shows a puffer on the front.

Yeah but thats a saltwater puff ;)

But to be honest, the reason why we normally feed mussels for human consumption is mainly because it comes with the shell on it whether it be half or full shell so that the puffer can actually wear its beak down to help keep its teeth in check...

Anyway, i'm sure PP should be in here at some point to give her opinion on the matter which will probably mean more than what most of us here can give you atm...

I have seen frozen bags of clams and mussels on the half shell and full shell. The half shell would be better for my puffer since its small. The mussels I have now are just pure meat.

Yeah thats why i thought i would mention it, since i noticed it looked like it was just meat in a pack which is probably great for a fish food wise, but unfortunately doesn't help out with teeth trimming...

Either way, just wait for some one like PP to drop by with some knowledge, since i'm sure she's probably heard of this product before..

-EDIT-

You may want to PM her, since it seems shes been in this section but may have missed this thread, alternatively, you could post the question over at her Forum

waste of time to feed your puffer mussel cubs . go to the market and buy some real market clams our mussels our crab legs

Yep, I agree. Best to go with what you can find in the produce dept of your grocery store. Just freeze them overnight & defrost in tank water with liquid fish vitamins. You can crack them open so your puffer will use it's teeth to scrape out the meat. Way cheaper that those pre-packaged fish foods, too.
