I traded my 8.5" Vieja synspilum for a 7" Vieja maculicauda and (more importantly) a juvie true Amphilophus labiatus. Some of you may say I got a raw deal because that Syns was freakin awesome but this Red Devil should grow up to be an awesome fish too. The Black Belt's personality is all but identical to the Syns' and though he's not as colorful I like him (or her, not sure on sex yet) Also I'm posting some pics of the RD...looking for opinions that he is 100% A labiatus because I was guaranteed he is pure bred.

1st pic-My Vieja Synspilum that I traded
2nd pic-My new Vieja Maculicauda (1st day in new tank)

Pics 3-7 Please identify this as pure Labiatus (i.e.-not half A Citrinellus)

Thank you.

Im not an expert so I cant tell you if he is pure bred or what ever but from what I know red devils have a longer snout, if you would call it that, and much thicker lips. So I guess he must have more labiatus in him than midas, awesome fish man :headbang2

That Black belt is better than the syn you got a good deal with just the BB.

Thanks and he already looks better now than he did when that pic was taken. That was about 20-30 minutes in a new tank. His blues are showing a little better and the black belt is more solid and defined. I fed NLS pellets followed by some frozen krill for dinner and all was accepted and eaten heartily. Does the Black Belt look male or female btw? I'm starting to think female.

You cannot visually tell the genetic make up of your fish. Not possible.

It looks like a lab, and if it's a reputable source that it came from, call it a lab. All you can get from people are guesses.

If that's the tube showing on the black-belt and not a water spot it's a female.

Thanks you guys. The BB is now settled in nicely and looking much less stressed than yesterday. I was watching her for a little while this morning and I think I like her better than the Synspilum.

I don't plan on breeding the RD but I still want a pure non-hybridized Labiatus. There's no way to really know I guess and that kind of sucks but oh well. Still I figure it was a good trade.

nice deal They look GREAT!
