My 10" red tail swallowed some pretty big rocks

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
im assuming ur talking bout an rtc. when i had one he ate rocks and stuff, but later would throw them out. the only thing is when they do that, it makes the water quality crappie with stuff that comes out their stomach so u gotta watch that

I have read here that some people have feed extra to get them to "expell stomach contents" but as said above be ready for massive water changes.

the redtail should eventually regurgitate the rocks. there was a incident in the u.k a few years ago where a 3ft redtail swallowed an internal filter and 3 days later it came back out. . .

Yes its a rtc. It was kind of funny watching him try to swim around like he had an anchor in his belly. Hopefully he'll be alright. thanks.

I've had this happen to my 13" RTC. It swallowed a bunch of 2.5"-3.5" rocks. It couldn't even swim right cause the rocks were weighing it down. They came out after a coupe of days

So this is a normal thing then? Instead of starting a whole new thread, I searched for something similar. My RTC has an massive exapndable stomach. It worries me, I am thinking of removing everything from the tank so he will not do that anymore. It actually freaks my son out a bit.

Hi there.
RTC have a Habit of doing such things & usually it's not a problem as they generally regurgitate whatever it is it's eaten.
Generally Big Cats have trouble digesting animal Fat so one trick is to starve your RTC until its good and Hungry & then offer a piece of Red meat with a good chunk of Fat attached, these will usually cause the RTC to vomit it's stomach contents after a day or so - Rocks included :)
However be ready for a a Big water change.
Overfeeding with something like Squid/Calamari tubes can also work.

As an aside I lost a stunning 8" RTC about 2 yrs ago after it had eaten a couple of suction Pads from a powerhead, I could see the fish swimming around with the edges of the Pads clearly visable bulging from its belly.
After a few days they had gone so I assumed it had regurgitated them somewhere but on searching the tank couldnt find them anywhere, the RTC refused to feed and stopped actively swimming around & sadly died about 2 wks later from what i can only assume was some form of Toxic poisoning :(
