wanted to show my setup and ask for your opinions about the filtration setup. sorry for the bad pics, used my cellphone also my acrylic tank is scratched up a bit :(. its an upgrade from my old 60 gallon glass tank and i payed about 2 bills for the current tank so im not complaining. one day i'll redo the tank and buff it all out but for now i dont mind.

the setup,

the right of the tank has a built in over flow, i filled it with bio balls and foam, also pillow stuffing at the top as a water polisher.

down into my makeshift sump 2(for strenght) 45 gallons rubbermaids, i used a stack-able plastic shelf, the first shelf is the drip plate then the rest is hallowed out, filled with bioballs and body scrubbers.

filled the side away from the return pump with about 5lbs of crushed coral

using a danner 1200gph pump as a return pump, guessing alot of head loss from using a big diameter pipe.

back into the tank.

also having a second pump pump the sump water thru a an old aquanautics 30watt UV sterilizer which goes into a skim-jet protein skimmer.(www.youtube.com/watch?v=dM3HNExt_4I)

prolly should cut down on the massive amounts of tubing but i cant bring myself to waste it haha. feel like i'll be reusing em later.

also have a cascade 1500 filled with bioballs, supposedly good for 200 gallons.

im wondering, while not a pretty setup, if it's adequate for my stock.

i have about 12 clown loaches, about 14 various cichlids (all about 2 inches) 2 plecos (a 3" and 6"), 2 cat fish(5" sailfin and 4" spotted), 5 yoyo loaches, 2 skunk loaches, and 2 birchirs ( 4" and a 6").

thanks for any advice.

also using a deep sand bed, sorta, i layered about an inch of gravel then covered it with a fine cloth, i didnt want the gravel to settle on top of the sand over time. then covered it with about 3 inches of black sand.

Nothing wrong with your tank...I've seen alot worse..

I'd watch the Birchir, he'll eventually get big enough to eat your africans! slow growers though, so plenty of time

Nice looking fish!

You've got plenty of filtration for your tank......don't sweat the scratches, comes with the acrylic territory, I've got 6 myself.

I had a protein skimmer sitting around from my old reef tank and was curious as well when I first set up my 180 male tank. I put it on the sump and couldn't get any foam (very difficult without saltwater). Unless your tank is super filthy (which yours doesn't appear to be), the protein skimmer is just a waste imo.

I'm curious what your tank is sitting on, because it looks to me like it's sitting on 2x4s without full bottom support which is a recipe for acrylic disaster.

Other than that it looks great.
