This is a branch off of my other thread regarding my 300's filtration I'm setting up. I'm just gathering opinions on what you guys would do.

My stock is going to be light, including one or two rays. I also have a drip system with a drain in my sump so I can add as much fresh water as need be.

Option 1) The tank has two 1" overflows, and four 1" returns. Given these holes, I can run two smaller pumps (plumb one to two returns each) and get about 3-4x turnover. I'm thinking dual quiet one 4000's. The pumps will be submersible in my sump so they will add some heat. This option also runs an 1800 gph powerhead. This route is being considered so I don't have to make my overflow holes bigger, and I can downsize from my current pump. Plus less water=less noise.

Option 2) Open the overflows to two 1.5" holes, or maybe even a 1.5" and a 2" hole. This will greatly increase flow allowing me to not valve back my pump quite as much, as well as filter and move much more water per hour. This set up will also have four 1" returns. However it is a solo external pump, so failure=potential disaster, and it won't add as much heat to the water. More water=more noise as well.

I think I hit all the pros and cons. And my 4 return bulkheads are going to be sch.80.

Anybody have $.02?

Option 2 : More turnover is always desirable IMO.

If you don't have an issue with debris in the bottom of the tank, then go with the more efficient of the two options. If the tank is staying clean, then additional turnover isn't necessary.

If 2 Quiet One 4000 uses less energy than the single pump, then stay. If the single pump is more efficient, and you want to make the drains larger, then go for it.

Yeaahh I was thinking that pharoah. Because my pump is more efficient than running two. Ill probably do option 2.

Keep in mind... with some pumps, throttling them back actually improves efficiency.

On a side note, with four 1" returns, the tank would be much better suited with two 1/5" drains.
