I am building a new 55 US gallon tank. Its 4 feet long 18 inches wide and 15 inches high. The bottom glass is 8mm and all the other are 5mm. I will make 3 top supports of 8mm, are 3 inches wide and 15 inches long. And there are 4 additional supports on the botton 13 inches long joinging the side and bottom and 3 feet long joining the front and botton and back and bottom.

Will it work or should I get 8mm glass for sides, front and back.

I thought this would work because I already have a 35 US gallon aquarium made of 5mm. Its 18 inches high and 30 inches long and 15 inches wide. And I have this one for 7 years now. I was 3 feet long but was leaking when I bought it second hand. After 2 years I had it shortened to 30 inches (2 1/2 feet). I has worked ever since.

5mm is approximately 0.196 inches.......

Check out some of the online documentation for tanks that have 18" of depth.

I would go 2mm thicker. If you had heavy fish that may ram into the tank, chances are they MAY break it.

I agree, Go with 7mm. That would be over 1/4 inch glass, which is what my 55g is made from(factory made).

Yeah I guess I should go for thicker glass. I am going to buy 8mm. I had already added the supports to the bottom glass and I have to first seperate them from the bottom. It is harder the get them out.

why build a 55? much cheaper to just buy one already made. i'd just either build quite a bigger tank, or make the tank just better dimensions then a standard 55 or buy a 55.

What dimensions are you saying it should be built. Why is there anything wrong with standard 55 dimensions. Its cheap to build one then to buy one.
