Hey I am thinking about keeping 2 Seg. Bichirs and 1 JD in my 55gal. and had a few questions. I am getting an Emperor 400 Bio-Wheel power filter and was wondering if that would be enough filtration for these fish? Also what type of substrate is best for bichirs? Would I be able to use live plants with these fish or should I stick with fake? Any special needs for these fish? Can't think of anything else now but any other suggestions anyone has would be great. Thanks!!

If thats all you should be ok! mostly depends on what you feed them, overfeeding and no other ground feeders but the Bichirs... IMO, a Canister is much better.. oh and that JD might want some company! good luck!

in the long run, that jd is going to outgrow that tank, so if you want a more permanent tankmate, maybe go for a firemouth or some other smaller cichlid of your preference.

u could do 2 cons 2 firemouths and a jd
then when the jd gets to about 6-7" sell it and buy a senagal :D
thats just what i would do

Im gonna have a similar setup. Right now I got a 4 inch JD and one 7" poly sen in a 55 gallon. I am also adding a delhezi. This is a growout so I think you will be fine with two sens and a JD. I would step up the filtration and add a canister. Right now I got a ac110 an eheim 2215 and an UGF and that seems to be more than enough. ( I even removed a 300 GPH HOB because the water was so invisible.

I've never used a canister filter before so what one would you reccomend to use that is easy to use?
Also what size tank can the JD live in for life? Does anyone know which bichir is the Dinosaur Bichir? Thanks for the advice so far!!

The JD should be fine for life in the 55 , The reccomended canister by me is the eheim classic found here www.bigalsonline.com and www.drfosterssmith.com

The Dinosaur bichir is what petsmart calls the polypterpus senegalus bichir :)
There is a neat section here on monster fish keepers about bichirs. I got mine from petsmart and he is by far my favorite fish.
