AND BEFORE ANYONE SAYS IT I KNOW ITS TOO SMALL! lol. I have a 220g that i am setting up. you will see more posts by me asking questions on that. But here is my current setup. filtration is HOB and a fluval fx3.

I think a 220 is too small for a rtc/tsc... I would upgrade to at least a 7x3x2. The catfish. Migt eat the other fish.... anywway. Welcoomme to mfk

well i cant go any bigger than that. and yeah when he was real little i had him with a small temensis peacock bass about half his size, he ate him. lesson learned early. i caught him 3 weeks ago trying to swallow a silver dollar. boy was that a site. the fish turned out ok. i guess i caught him soon enough.

I had a bumble bee cichlid for years, and hated it! What a mean lil fish, finally got rid of him about 6 mnths ago to a friend. Welcome to mfk!

7x3x2 is WAY too small for a rtcXtsn

If you ever want any tankmates, Juveniles will need a 600g or larger and adults will need at least 1500g

A 220g will last until the 2 foot width is exceeded. Which means a year at most before the catfish will need to be rehomed.

Ehh... More like 1.5-2 years...
But still, it'll come pretty fast.
Growth rate for these guys is between 1-2" a month depending on how you feed them. So, I would try to only feed him 3 times a week or so to try to keep him from exploding in that tank, just to buy a little extra time before you need to find a bigger home. Don't under-feed though. Once it hits about 10" or so, it'll become pretty aggressive on an empty belly.
Really, these are fish that are on my list of things that I don't think should be widely available in the aquarium trade.

Yeah, the growth rate on those guys is crazy! But they are a very cool animal. Any suggestions for a good catfish to replace him with when the time comes?

How about we don't pester the guy on his first post. He will learn what he needs to from this site. When the time comes he will know what to do with his catfish. I think everyone scares away a lot of new members by getting onto them about tank size. They will figure it out!! Anyway, welcome to MFK slipperypete. There a lot of knowledgeable people on this site so all the knowledge you should need is here somewhere. Good luck with your tanks!
