My Aimara

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
He is always hiding during the day time and never swims around when the lights are on, what can I do to make him swim out more often and not only at night with no lights, perhaps adding some more fish in the tank? Pls advise, thanks :nilly:

I found that while small and in relatively large open aquarium mine were always shy. In much smaller tanks I found it brought on there more normal character. Given some time and an inch or 2 they become more open.

Hi Jelly, thanks a lot for your reply, your advice is very helpful to me. Do you think adding some fish in the tank will improve his 'shyness'?

What kind of sand do you use for your Aimara tank? Cheerss :)

No problem at all.

Adding others is a mixed bag really. I had a setup very simalar to yours. I think it was 10" in a 6x3. I added three large SD's (silver dollars) it worked well for a couple of months then he started bitting them in half. I rescued 1 of them that I still have. I believe this was down to believing he was now big enough to eat them. I don't think he ever saw them as a terratoral threat. I have a YouTube video somewhere on here showing them. I am on my phone at the moment so difficult to find a link. Also worth pointing out that adding larger more boisterous fish can have the opersite affect and make him more reclusive. At the size they are there are plenty of bigger animals that will take a snap at them in the wild.

At the moment I have both of mine using dark slate chips which I now hate. The best I had was a standard sand as the lighter colour brings out there patterns. Mine look very dark at the moment. I like the colour of your substriate. one thing to add you want the bottom to be as easy as possible to clean, even now mine still attack any cleaning tools including hands. I also try to use softer tools when I can as I have had the odd tooth pop out when they hit things hard. They grow back.

Appologuis for any spelling or grammar errors. On a bumpy train on my phone.

Thanks a lot for your reply, I was going to add a school of Myleus in the same tank this weekend, but now I might skip the idea to avoid any casualty. My Aimara is 11" now and the tank is exactly 6'x3', hopefully it will become less shy and swims around sometime soon.

I used a thin layer of Nile Sand by ADA and planning to add some La Plata Sand which has a lighter color and more powdery.

Sorry, but just one more thing, do you think it is a good idea to occasionally feed my Aimara with small freshwater crayfish and crab as this is what they normally eat in their natural habitat?

Don't worry abt the spelling and I will try to dig ur youtube video.

On the feeding front variety is always good as long as you know they come from a none contaminated source I would say yes.

One thing I have seen and would like to try would be a group of very small fish, tetras etc but the wolf needs to be large for this to work. My small one which is now about 17" is still to small and would eat them up. The second about 20+" haven't measured him for ages is with some brycon and a large ATF, they would definatly eat them.

You have motivated me to sort my gravel out now.
