I almost lost my 17" silver aro today. I was down in my fish room looking at my 50 baby piranhas. I decided to feed them so I went upstairs to thaw out some shrimp. I also made a sandwich and let the dogs out. So I go back down stairs after 20 minutes. I was watching my piranha tear up the shrimp when I looked at the side of the chair and seen my silver aro laying on the ground. I just sat there in shock for a minute or two. It looked like he was dead beacause he wasn't breathing and he was laying right next to the dehumdifer so he looked like he was dried out. Then I seen him take a breath so I picked him back up and threw him in the tank. He just floated at the top for a minute or two, then he started swimming alittle, but mostly floating.

It's been 2 hours since it happened and he looks like he is back to normal just some scratches on his eyeball and a couple of scales missing. That was a close call. I just added some salt to the tank to help him heal a little faster.

Glad to hear he is O.K....Hope it stays that way.

How did it get out? Good to hear it's OK.

He jump through the glass lid is the only thing I can figure. I usally have clamps down on the lids, but that time I didn't have the clamps on. They are some really strong jumpers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wow..look out man..aro are EXCELLENT JUMPERS..i've already lost..lock down the cover..:D

I have several containers full of water sitting on top of my aro tank.
Glad to hear yours is gonna pull through.
One of my aro's has been on the floor about 3 times, but I've always been in the room at the time...

Glad to hear your aro is ok. I just had my first "escape" three days ago. I finally broke down and bought a 650 gallon fiberglass vat with a 2x6 viewing window to house my bigger fish. I had a silver aro and several large severums, a red hook, five silver dollars and other fish that had grown up together in an 80 gal. The aro was approaching two feet and the crowded conditions made him 'a little bit cranky' in the words of Steve Irwin. Anyway, after setting up the vat I took the top off the 80 and proceeded to net out the cichlids. After getting a few of them out I took a large clear bag filled it with water and tried to coax the aro into the bag but gave up after 15 minutes. So I got a landing net out of the garage and placed it into the tank and POW!! out of the tank went the aro. :nilly:He flopped on the floor a couple of times before I could get him in the net!! I ran from the house to the shop where I had the vat and dumped him in. He sank to the bottom and sulked for about half an hour and then begin swimming a bit. He had lost a couple of scales so I added some Pema and Melafix to the vat. It took him another two days before he would eat some dried krill, tomorrow I'll try something more his size. But in any case he and the other fish seem to enjoy the larger space and the severums are already starting to guard a spawning site!:)
