Hey guys , my green asian stopped eating about five days ago , his diet is hikari gold large pellets and crickets a couple times a week , he absolutly loves his crickets all he does is put them in his mouth then spits them out same with the pellets , the only thing i noticed that he's doing different is he kinda opens his mouth a little and pops his gills open and closed a little once really fast ??? . He is recovery quite well now from HITH , well what looks like it is ( ive been told aro's dont get HITH???) thanks to his previous owners very bad keeping of him :irked: ive owned him for about 3-4 months now he has had hunger strikes before but only for a day or two then resumes but now im worried?????? thanks guys

Aros have no Hexamita ( HITH ).. Let it strike, but let it strike after observing whether it is not hurt in the mouth ( perhaps a cricket made a small wound in its mouth )...

I would increase the temp, somewhat, to slightlty accelerate its metabolism and help him improove...

aro's go on strike, now and then...

Thanks miguel , i was hoping u would reply , love ur aro's by the way:headbang2 , how long should i let the strike go before getting really concerned?? I dunno what he has/had if they can't get HITH he had a couple spots around his nose that were white and looked deeply pitted and a big spot about the size of a dime on top of his head that looked the same all the small spots are gone now but the big one is healing its about half its original size now  , should i try adding any salt? dont like to add stuff if i dont have to...

Edit : What is a good temp to raise to? and what should he be at regularly? right now its at 77

Maybe check your water for NH3 et ammonia, maybe do a little water change (10-20%). Added oxygene with an air pump might help with the breathing heavy part.

When my RTG refuses to eat, i put in black water, and everything seems to be working great after, it just makes the water less attractive. Anyway, hope it helps a bit, i'm stille a newbie.

Aros do get HITH, and I have seen it....due to bad water conditions, and quickly improved with proper diet and water conditions!

9 of 10 times, fish stop eating due to water issues, most likely ammonia, and nitrite problems. Any recent filter cleanings, or something other then that, that could cause your tank to go through a cycle?

I have yet to encounter an aro to take athe hikari gold pellets, not even Silvers that I have had, will eat that stuff...LOL....especially after you give him crickets....

Your best bet is to check water parimeters, then let us know....

Aros does get HITH bro miguel.

Tychevelle how big is ur green aro again? if its bigger than a foot let him starve...
for now, test ur water, something probably is off. focus on keeping ur water parameters good, it will eat if its hungry.

Thanks guys , yeah he's around 12" he loves hikari gold and crickets his previous owner fed him only shrimp nothing else but as soon as i got him home he wouldn't even pay attention to any shrimp i offered him , i even got the guy to feed him for me at his house ! and till this day wont take shrimp .... loves his hikari , well when he eats :nilly: , all my tanks are on a DIY drip system water usually stays at zero's with nitrates steady at 5 , im doing a test right now , doing the wait 5 minutes thing , he's got a bubble wand in his tank, tonight i offered him some pellets with no interest but you could tell he was interested in the crickets got his nose right up to them but just watched them .....

test show zero's still with nitrates @ 5

This is my suggestion. Put a good bag of active carbon into the tank and leave the carbon in there for about 4 days. After that see if there's improvement rather than keep altering the water parameter by water changing and stuffs?
