Finally got around to setting up Chompers, my 3 in AST's own habitat. He is much happier now, lots of clean water, lots of fish, no noisy turtle Tankmates trying to nip at his tail, and lots of real plants in there he loves to climb through. If you look at the bottom left side of the log, you can just barely make out his snout above it LOL.

whyd you take them out to clean their tank?

How else can I clean the rocks and everything else? I use scolding hot water to flush everything out, sure they wouldn't like that.

You dont need to do that, you must allow your tank to stabilize and bacteria colonies to establish themselfes. Your tank would be much healtier. That treatment is only needed when you have sick animals.

Well I do allow my tanks to stabilize and grow Bacteria, but about once every six months I completely clean out the substrate and change it and just keep about 25% of the tanks water, and then pour it back in once I am done so I already have a starter colony in the tank. Too be honest that is about the only time I even do water changes at all, my water stays well filtered and crystal clear and is low on nitrates and stays like that for months. I do most of my feeding outside the tank except for the AST, so I never truly get really soiled water.

you dont need beneficial bacteria in a turtle tank.
i dont even use biological filtration on any of my tanks. purely mechanical.
