got a jag about two weeks ago and he is awesome he is in a grow out 30 gal for now with an oscar and a little channel cat (jag-1.5,O-1.75,cat-2 inches)
but my jag is getting off to a great start. wants to kill kill kill. even my O which they seem like buddies but he has bare spots on both of his sides from being pushed around. he still eats and acts fine tho so idk what there deal is. but im wondering when i can tell its sex... i want a male so as soon as i know if its a female i will be trading for a male
mine is very agressive at his small size has relatively long fins and seems to get some color in his fins. but when he lightens up he looks just like an adult femal :( (i say he just being positive)
but let me know what yall think
no pics yet :(

males will have patterning that breaks up into the small "jaguar" spotting while females will retain the juvenile large side spots, but at that size it is still to small to tell for sure, also even at that size jags can be very territorial and that oscar is in danger, especially if it already has bite marks, but in a divider and grow them out that way until they are big enough to put into your larger tank. also i hope you are putting them in something way bigger than that 60g in your tank set-up which is already grossly overstocked, a jag and O would need at least a 150g IMO in order for the jag to feel comfortable and not kill the O as jags are much more aggressive than oscars are

well in a thirty gallon they should max out at like 6 in right? :screwy: guys i said a grow out... i will move them to my 120 when they are about 3 in.
yea i need to update that. i traded that for a 120 gallon
im sure its even over stocked but i got the filters to match so my water stays perfect :grinno:
but yea there is some aggression already but the o is learning to stay out of the jags space so they are workin it out. hopefully. but if they have to many issues the o will go to a friends tank bc i want the jag as long as itis a male. i really dont like fems much. unless you think someone would trade a male for a female... but i doubt it

yeah i saw that you said it was a grow out but i looked in your sig and only saw another small tank so i was confused, but yeah i would re-home that RTC and gar asap if you dont have a pond to put them in. but yeah IMO a 30g is even too small as a grow out for a jag if it is with tankmates, i say this because i have a 20g long and tried growing out two jags the same size as yours and some tiger barbs and i had to separate all of them, the alpha jag was going after the other one and then both of them were making it their duty to take out the tiger barbs, and they were only 1.5in in a 30in long tank!! jags are very territorial and are super aggressive IMO if they dont think they are getting enough space even if it seems like the tank is plenty big enough. i think its only a matter of time before he takes out the O so i would divide them, in the larger tank they may not have any issues at all but in the grow out tank i dont see him tolerating it for long. just my 2 cents from my experience of trying to grow these guys out in a smaller tank, i think it would be a fine grow out tank for him by himself though, andeven with tons of filtration you are still going to need a larger tank than a 120 for all of them

and as far as trading, you might find someone who has an extra male and is trying to get a pair that would trade their extra male for a female if that is what yours turned out to be

yea the rtc is goin soon and the gar will be goin to my dads pond when they out grow this tank. but they got some room to grow for a while. n yea idk what im goin to do yet. i will give them another week and if the jag doesnt back off then i will just sperate them. i make sure to have a few feeders in the tank so the jag has somethin to take his aggresion out on.
